turbo manifold questions
I have a 89 745 turbo wagon. It's in great shape but recently started making a puttering sound (like a lawn mower) that is noticeable when idling and louder when accelerating. I took it to an auto shop yesterday and was told I might have a crack in my manifold and that this could cost $2000 to repair. Is this necessarily the manifold, or something like just the gasket? I found a manifold from an 89 740 wagon for $20, is there a differnce between the turbo? Would replacing it myself be extremely hard to do?

RE: turbo manifold questions
You need to find a Turbo manifold if your is cracked.
BUT before you buy one. Start the car from cold. Then feel around where the manifold meets the engine. Feel for air coming out while it is running. (Caution it will get hot fast) My guess would be the exhaust manifold gaskets. |
RE: turbo manifold questions
Thanks for your help. It is the gaskets. Going to have to remove the turbo to get to it. Wish me luck.

RE: turbo manifold questions
If you are careful you can remove some thiings and get the turbo and manifold to slide back enough as one peice to replace the gaskets.
