Volvo 1990 240 motor swap 740 1988
Hey guys!! New to the forum. I'm looking to swap my 5 speed manual 240dl wagon motor. It's A b230f I'm pretty sure. It's all
Stock. I want to swap it with a volvo 740 turbo engine with a automatic transmission. I need to know If I can do this swap and bolt up my manual tranny to the automatic motor. Would it bolt right up? I know the motor will Fit. It's a 2.3 litre turbo motor. I just need to know if my 240 tranny will bolt up to the 740 motor. Anyone know? |
Should not be an issue.

a 1989+ car with LH2.4 has a notch in the bell housing for the CPS, a pre 89 transmission doesn't have this notch, but you can cut it with a dremel or whatever.
a manual and an automatic use different length drive shafts (the front half ot he drive shaft differs) I have no idea of 240 and 740 drive shafts are interchangable, I suspect not. |
so, what you want to do is swap this LH2.2 1988 740 Turbo engine into your 1990 stickshift 240 ?
you'll need to swap the turbo ECU and ICU and all the wiring harnesses associated with them into the 240. 740 fuse panels are /completely/ different than 240, ditto the relay locations (centralized on the 740 fuse panel vs piecemeal all over the car on the 240) |
Sounds like a fun job and it will be a lot of work . The engine installation should be straight forward but the wiring will be the fun part. I've done several Jaguar to TPI Chev. V8 conversions and one of the things I found was to make sure you get the wiring harness from the engine to the ECU along with getting the ECU. It will be worthwhile to get the fuse panel too. As mentioned above check the bell housing and make sure there aren't any visual differences. Be prepared to be frustrated until you sort out the wiring. Take plenty of pictures and post for everyone to enjoy. Good luck

not sure you could fit a 740 fuse panel into a 240, they are in completely different places.
|
But could you swap the head, manifold, turbo, and ecu out of a 740 into a 240? In my case 88 to 88.
|
the 88 740 uses a different ignition system than the 88 240. the injection is the same. I don't know if the vacuum operated ICU of the 240 can handle a turbo or not (guessing not, as it wouldn't know what to do with positive manifold pressure). I believe the 740 ICU is mounted behind the dashboard, rather than in the engine compartment like the 240 one.
you will, of course, also need to swap the air path stuff, the turbo airbox is on the other side, with the intercooler behind the radiator, no idea if that will fit without a fair bit of modification. |
