Volvo 740 stalls and is hard to start.
Hello everyone - New on the seen, live in southern California and the wind is blowing 30 - 50mph - Yuck. My daughter has a 1990 740 Volvo that recently won't start. We can start it with starting fluid and it will idle fine, but as soon as you give some gas it dies. We have replaced the plugs, cleaned the mass airflow sensor, checked fuse #1 that was recommended to reset something with the engine, but nothing has changed - any ideas would be appreciated - Thanks

I moved this thread to the 740 section where you may get some help.
Have you checked fuel pressure? Some of these cars have 2 fuel pumps. If the main pump is out it will not run properly. |
actually, MOST of these cars have two pumps (all LH 240's and 740/940's, except Regina and 94/95 940 non-turbo Bosch).
if the main pump is out, it won't run at all. if the in-tank pump is out, it will run OK with more than 1/2 tank of gas, but cut out and miss badly with less than 1/4 tank, and the main pump will be straining, noisy, and have its life shortened. |
Since it's not spark related, it's a fuel mixture issue. Too much air relative to fuel or visa versa.
I agree with Pierce with first checking the fuel pump pressure but I take it, your air filter has been changed and not clogged to effect that air to fuel ratio? I know a simply question but nothing noted above? |
