volvo 940 stalling
 

Hi,
I have a 94 Volvo 940. I am having stalling issues. I pulled the code, and got a 1-2-1 Faulty signal to/from Air Mass Meter. I changed the Mass Airflow sensor, as was recommended. Since then the car has a hard start, when it warms up, it runs fine, then after about 4 or 5 minutes (in park, or driving) the car stalls out. Most of the time it will start again, but after a couple of minutes it will stall again.
I rechecked the codes, now its giving a 1-1-3 Fuel trim (lambda control) too lean or rich.
What can I do to correcdt this?

Hi Shagmire and welcome to the site.

My manual says that's a fuel injector code. Check your fuel pressure, it may be low. May have a bad fuel pump, fuel regulator or clogged filter.

Not sure the codes are directly related to stalling.

First item I check when stalling is the fuel pump relay. Does the fuel pump run for a second or two when you first turn the key to position II? After a number of years the solder joints on the little circuit board crack and make intermittent connections. Pull the relay out, pop the plastic cover off and re-flow the solder joints. Or, if you don't have soldering equipment, just get a new one. They are less than $20 on the internet.

The second item to check is the Crank Position Sensor. It is located on the top of the bell housing where the engine and tranny meet. It has a black wire that runs to a connector right at the firewall. Check for fraying or peeling insulation. If the wire is frayed or peeling, it most likely needs replacement. If the car stalls, have someone wiggle the wire to see if it helps.

Regarding the codes, make sure there are no leaks in the air intake between the MAF and the throttle body. Leaks in the hose (or any other vacum leaks) can cause it to throw a code.
