Winshield moulding
 

Need to replace windshield moulding after glass replacement. The glass supplier stated none was available. Any ideas?

Ouch...wish you would have brought the subject up prior to the installation. Beginning in 1991, 240's got a different windshield set up. Rather than imbedded in sealant with plastic clips to snap the trim on to...they went with a black rubber seal that is part of the windshield. That windshield is less prone to leaks and has the added benefit of needing no trim. Volvo used the exact same windshield dimensionally, from 1967 until 1993. The 140's, 164's, 240's and 260's all used the exact same windshield. The trick is to tell the glass shop your car is a 92 or 93. If you tell them it's an 84...they'll bring the old style windshield...

Sorry for digging up a old thread but I found this using google and so far the best straight answer of 91-93 have a rubber seal.


BUT, using google and searching the forum I have yet to find a lead to somewhere I can find the 91-93 rubber seal for sale. IPD, VLVworld and RockAuto have nothing

As swiftjustice said, the 91-93 windshields COME with the rubber seal pre-attached. the only way you get that seal is to buy a new windshield.

First, there should be no difference between any 940 windshields, up to the end as the body shell, etc. is the same, i.e. '91,92, 93, 94, 95, are all the same. As are 90-92 740s and no doubt 960s.
Second, there is just no way for this windshield to come with trim "preattached"! The whole idea is to spread adhesive around the metal edge frame, float the glass on top, snap the trim to cover gaps, etc. For a windshield to be different for the years '91-'93 would suppose a totally different manufacturing process in the middle of a model series--ridiculous!

swift was talking about 91-93 240 not 940

most newer cars have windshields with pre-attached molding/trim bits. installation is virtually the same minus the install-the-trim step. squirt glue around window frame, float glass, done.

now, I've heard but not confirmed that 95+ 960/s90/v90 have a windshield with modern preattached molding, and that these fit the older 7/9 bodies just fine. I'd love to get better confirmation of that, as the 7/9 classic molding pieces are increasingly unobtanium

I had Safelite replace the glass on our 740 a few years ago. I told them to be careful when removing the trip because it was very rare. Well they bent it and I had to escalate to their customer service folks. It took them 2 months to find a used set and they found that in a scrap yard in Europe. Good luck as maybe 240 trim may be more available.

My '91 244 had the windshield replaced about a decade ago and has the old style aluminum trim with rubber outline gasket/trim on the outside. The trim is peeling and screwed up all over.

Couple of questions:
1. I have asked the windshield folks that my car is 1993. Does the rubber trim come pre-attached with the new windshield or do I need to order it separately from IPD/FCP?
2. I got rust on the driver's side lower corner. Will they create an issue with replacing the windshield?

the 1993 windshields have the rubber trim permanently attached to the glass, and you toss out your old trim piece. you can't get this new trim seperately.

ask the glass people to carefully inspect the sheet metal all the way around the windshield after removing the old one, and removing and re-sealing any rusty spots. the lower corners are the most likely to be perforated right through... we paid the 'good' glass place in town an extra $150 to do an extra-thorough job on this, they used a wire brush on a angle grinder to hog out all the rusty bits, and painted some kind of thick rust-reducer sealant all the way around. none of this is visible after the '93 style window was installed on our 87, AND the new low profile trim made the whole car quieter at freeway speeds. the owner of the shop did our car himself, he was quite familiar with 240's, had done a bunch in the past for the former Volvo dealer (now defunct) as well as several of the local indies. When I asked about the 93 windshield, he didn't even hesitate, thats what he would have used unless we expressly asked for the old style trim.

I got a quote from Safelite but I doubt it if they will take care of the rust. Should I try a body shop or are there local glass shops that will help with the rust?

Got this done today. Had a 1993 windshield installed. Rust on the bottom was due to the Safelite folks not adding the polyurethane goop correctly - which in essence resulted for air pockets in the seam where they add the goop. So both the areas rusted.

Not terrible. The guy threw some of the anti rust coating in there for good measure.
I have the masking tape on there for the next 2 days, but its significantly quieter now. No more whistles and whining from the wind around the windshield.
