88 Volvo 765 tic Air Bag Replacement
 

I need some help replacing the air bag on my 88 760. The haynes manual does not cover the air bag. I have not been able to figure out how to get the cover under the steering column off to get to the air bag bolts. The air bag is the same on 740,760 & 940. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I changed my airbag today. The phillips head screws in the bottom cover of the steering column wre hard to get out. Ihad to pull down on the bottom cover while I loosened the screws.
The tilt lever came off easy with an allen key.
The T30 Torx screwdriver was hard to get onto the screws. When I got the screwdriver onto the screws there was no room to break loose the screws I put Vise Grips on the screwdriver shaft and they just slipped, I kept tightening the Vise Grips until the screws broke loose.
I removed the airbag and the wire connector was melted to the airbag. The connector was ruined so I wrapped it with tape and shoved it out of the way and installed the airbag.
I was replacing the airbag because it had been deployed before I bought the car and was covered with black duct tape.
I bought the airbag used at a nearby junkyard for $30. I had looked up airbag covers and they were listed for $75. So I came out ahead with an airbag that is disabled but a nice looking steering wheel.

I thought that someone could use this info.
