Default 94 volvo 960 hot engine start problems

Dear Users,

I bought 1994 volvo 960. I can start the engine when it is cold. After I drive the car, when the engine warms up, I turn off the engine.
I should wait for a while to start the engine. Engine has to wait until it gets cold in order to start. I already replaced the starter so starter is not the problem. Can anybody have an idea? Could it be IAC VALVE or motronic computer?
Thank you.

If the engine cranks, that means the starter turns the engine over but the engine does not fire up and run.

If it does not crank until it is cold, it could be a couple of things, but the most likely thing is the gear selector switch (PNP Switch).

Next time try this, place foot on brake pedal to keep car from rolling, turn ignition key to run, that is when the dash light illuminate. Then move the gear selector back and forth thru Park and Low. Do this 30-40 times. Place car in park and try to start.

The PNP switch is a weak spot on these cars, and with time and heat, the grease inside gets hard and does not allow the car to sense that it is in park. Also sometimes but not always, the reverse light stop working.

If it started after that then you will have get the PNP switch replaced. Because eventually this trick will not work, it is only for a quick fix.

If the rowing the gear selector does not help, you may have a problem with your electric connections with the batter, or a battery cable is not right.

But my first guess would be the PNP switch.

Dan,

Could it be also IAC Valve? I will try what you said.
Thank you.

So the car is NOT cranking? Does it start in neutral?

No it does not start in neutral neither. The only way it starts is the when the engine is cold. My mechanic says the IAC valve. Cold/hot start problems might be caused by IAC Valve. It might be possible?

Possible but not likely. I would check other things first. The coolant temp sensor, would be my first thing to suspect.

How does it run and idle once it running?

Since now we now know the engine cranks but just will not start, try this next time it is hot. Push the accelerator to the floor when starting, this will shut off fuel flow to the injectors, it sounds as though your engine is rich when it is hot. The fuel pressure regulator could be leaking raw fuel into the intake system.

Other items to check, the idle motor (IAC valve). That part can be cleaned out and also check out by measuring the ohm resistance.
Intake or vacuum leak, throttle sensor, fuel pump, fuel pump relay.

Many things to check out before buying any new parts.

The problem is.. first thing in the morning, go to start the car it cranks and starts up perfect... if I shut it off after even 2 minutes of it running and I try to restart it, nothing.... it will crank and crank and crank but won't fire... if I wait about an hr or so and try to start it again I have to keep the motor cranking until it acts like it wants to start then I have to feather the gas to get it to fire... it looks like the fuel pump relay has been changed, so I am suspecting the IAC valve next, but I have heard also that the valves on these engines stick and won't close properly.. but will fully reseat after the engine is cool enough but yeah... I can start fine first thing but if I shut it off and try to restart it, it just cranks if I wait another twoo three hrs... try to start it it will fire no problem... its getting gas and spark so its either something electrical or the valve thing is true... or somethin else

Dude, we are trying to help you. If you can not grasp the suggestions take it to a shop and pull out your check book. Those are your options. Starting another thread or repeating yourself 12 times without actually doing the trouble shooting that is suggested is a waste of all of our times.
