960 cranks, pauses, cranks, starts
 

Please help! My 1996 Volvo 960 has developed a most curious quirk soon to be problem I’m sure. When I go to start the car it cranks for a second, stops, cranks again and usually starts. All the time I’m holding the key in the crank position. On a couple of occasions it has crank – pause - crank – pause – crank – start. My micro switch has been out for some time and I must depress the shift lock button to put the car in gear but this has never been a problem. Also, I do hear something clicking under the dash, far left, between each crank – pause. Any ideas would be appreciated because I know it’s only a matter of time before I reach that endless pause.
