960 P0740 code
 

I got a P0740 code today and am not having any luck researching it. Does it mean the tranny needs to be rebuilt? I reset it and after 40 miles it didn't come back on.

Looks like it's a code for the lock up torque converter solenoid. If it does re-appear, you are probably looking at replacing the solenoid in the transmission. You would need to pull the pan, and then it is easily accessible.

So, if it comes back on (200 miles and it is still off), where can I find the solenoid and is all I have to do to pull the tranny pan. I am thinking of changing the tranny fluid since it is shifting a little harder lately. It does have 243k miles on it now, so I guess I can't expect too smooth a shift. How much is the solenoid if I need it??

Its baaaack! The light came on again. I cleared it and it took all of 20 miles to come back on. I have not been able to locate the solenoid.

I checked the fluid and it is full and it is red, so I don't think the fluid is the problem.

To replace the solenoid, yuo remove the pan and unbolt the solenoid. It's pretty easy. However, finding on may be a problem. I would check Volvo for this part.


They may come as a set, there is an S1, S2, and the SL is the one you are after.

Can it be cleaned or repaired? And how much fluid will I need if I pull the pan. How much is the part roughly. I am sure if I get it from the dealer it will be only available as a set.

I called the dealer today and the SL is $284. Can you say bend over!

I guess I am going to have to get the part (or get rid of it). It is shifting pretty hard from 1st to 2nd. Is that a symptom of the solenoid being bad or is it something else? I also called FCP Groton and they said they have it for $255 which would be cheaper than the $284 plus tax from the dealer. If it is the A341E the filter is $18, if it is the other one, it is $30.

I think I am going to change the filter and fluid and see if it helps. It is weird, it shifts hard from 1st to 2nd, but it is as smmoth as glass in the other gears. Clogged filter maybe??

One more question, I know it is an Aisin AW30-40 is that the A341E?

Yeah, the tag says AW30-30 A341E. I ordered the filter today since I would change it regardless of whether I need the solenoid or not. I figure why not spend $30 before I spend $300 since I will spend the $30 eventually anyway and who knows? I got 4 quarts of tranny fluid, I hope that is enough.

I took it apart to change the filter and the connector on the very front plug inside (I am assuming the SL solenoid) was cracked. The plastic around it crumbled when I pulled it out. My question is what do I do about the connector now? Is it ok to put it back together with the metal exposed ( I am assuming this is what was kicking the codes) or what do I have to do? I will be scraping the old gasket off the pan for a while. I will not put it back together until I hear something. The filter had a half inch cockroach in it by the way. They will live in anything won't they!

Ok. So my boss's Volvo mechanic said to pack the connector with Permatex Ultra Black Silicon RTV and let it set overnight, then refill the transmission. Does this sound right? Permatex's website says it is transmission fluid impervious, so that sounds right.
