Blinking orange up arrow......

Help, have a 96 volvo 960 with around 120,000 miles on it. Had left it setting for three days and when I got back in to start it up I got this orange blinking up arrow light. When I put the car in drive it barely pulls out. Reverse works fine but going foward is very sluggish. Called dealer and they tell me something possibly wrong with the tranny. Had car towed to a tranny shop and of coarse the blinking light is off. Possible electrical problem.

Taking car to local volvo mechanic tomorrow. What should I expect and how much will this "electrical problem" cost???

Thanks in advance for any input....

RE: Blinking orange up arrow......

Off the top of my head its sounds identical to a defective PNP (Nuetral Position Switch). I purchased one for back up, if this were to happen to me. I save about $50-$80 going to FCP rather than the dealer for this original Volvo part.

I watched other posts, and websites, and everyone with this problem seems to see their "E", "S", and "W" pm tje gear selector area alternating while the up arrow blink on the cluster. This happened to me once, and I think it was because I left it in "W" mode too long. But, I was not able to get it out of Winter mode for quite a while at that time.

Hope this helps,

I don't have any engine codes at all. My up arrow only happened one time, and have yet to see it again.

RE: Blinking orange up arrow......

Have had this problem numerous times on my wifes S90. It is caused by either a faulty rev senor or the speedometer. While under extended warranty Volvo replaced the rev sensor at least 7 times; it would last for a month or two , then blink again. They replaced the speedometer once (accroding to the invoice said that cost was around $1100). Now that it is out of warranty had the same problem, rev sensor di not correct the problem, but have found Erie Volvo in NJ they send me a used instrument cluster ($150) with mileage close to what ours had installed it had the codes cleared and everything is working fine. (Erie Volvo 800-441-ERIE ask for Roy).
