Check Engine Light-960

So I managed to solve the problem I had with my steering wheel myself. Now, I have another issue. The car has been hard starting when the engine is cold, and the check engine light is on. A service light comes on for a while after the engine starts, then goes out. What's odd is that the car hard starts in the morning, but not the afternoon. My brother suggested I check the OBD codes. Thanks!

Checking the codes is always a good start. Sounds like the Coolant Temp Sensor is faulty...

So...I screwed up. I tore the cord off the tester in my car; the wiring was really old and starting to fray. But before that happened, I tried it in the 1 port and got blinking, then the three and got 1-1-1. What else should I have done?

You have CEL on, and 111 code? Not supposed to happen, should be a fault somewhere... Are you sure you had the lead in the right slot, it is #2 for 940, not sure if the 960 are the same...

Sure it's not the service interval light? If it goes out after a mile or so it's the service interval.

There is a recessed button to press on the instrument cluster to reset the service light. It comes on every 5,000 miles as a reminder. It does not mean that there is a fault.

A 1995 960 might have an OBD II connector. I remember getting some 850s of that era that some had the old style push button, some had an OBD II port and some had an OBD II port with nothing wired to them.

I doubt that you have both the push button unit and OBD II.

My 95 850 had both the push button as well as an OBD connector - technically it was OBD1 so not sure if a standard OBD2 reader would work as they do with the 96+ years. If you broke the diagnostic block's probe wire you can do two things (1) use a paper clip to jumper the probe wire back into the block (did this on my 850) 2) google around for how to fabricate your own LED tool that connects via the OBD connector. Basically its an LED with a push button that does what the diagnostic block does.

If you had an OBD II connector in a 95, you could read data using the generic OBD II protocols. For the push button unit, I never had one with the cord ripped off.

I think the deal with the OBD1 is that it may not present all the OBD2 standard data. Don't have my 95 any more so I can't check out what happens.

OK, so an update. The problem that was causing the light to come on was taken care of; that was in September. Some time after that, it came back on. I tried pushing the button, nothing. (Do I have to hold it down for a certain period of time to make it go off?) Now, whenever I start the car for the first time in the day, it seems like something's going to go wrong, at least for the first minute or two. I don't want to get myself into an expensive repair job at this time. What's the best course of action for now? Thanks!
