Hi,
I've been changing my front pads on the cars I've owned for over thirty years (probably a weeks amount of work for a shop mechanic!) but am baffled at the problem I'm having with my 1995 960. I easily removed the pads on both sides but am having the same problem on both sides replacing them. With the new pads in place the lower caliper guide pin bolt does not clear the lower mount (the part that the lower bolt screws into). Thinking that the piston was not pushed in enough I simply removed the inner pad and still the caliper does not clear. On both sides the upper pin bolt (the part that the mounting screw goes into) moves in and out but the lower pin bolts do not move. If it did move I suspect I would not be having this problem. Should they move? If yes, then how should I get them to move? If not, then what is the problem? For the record I did put the old pads back in and the caliper closed nicely. I even got a different set of pads (different brand) but still the same problem. Thinking that car has a caliper from a different year I checked pads for a 94 and 96 and they use the same pads as my 95.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You probably need to compress the caliper piston in with a c-clamp.

The piston has been pushed in all the way with a c-clamp. I even tried putting on the caliper without the inner pad (the one by the piston) and the caliper will not line up properly.

pistons? dont these cars have pistons on both sides of the caliper?

No, there is only one piston on each caliper on the 95 960's

It's been a while since I did it but mine did slide on. It chanbers some how. I would offer to dig into mine but I really don't have time.

I was informed by a Volvo mechanic that the lower guide pin bolt in fact should move in and out and since it doesn't it must be frozen. He recommended me to heat up the bolt to get it moving again.
