The fuel pump started making more noise than usual a couple of days before it failed altogether. The only time you can hear the pump is without the engine running when you turn the key to "on" - it runs for about a second to pressure up the system. Then I finally went to start the car and when I turned the key to "on" I didn't hear the pump at all. When I tried to start the car,the enginefired just a little then just cranked without starting. 3 or 4 attempts gave exactly the same result. This little firing and cranking was exactly the same symptoms I had with my former Volvo - an '89 740, and it was the fuel pump.
Getting the fuel pump out was a bit of a pain in the *** on my wagon - not much room to work, several hoseconnections to the top of the housing, and a REALLY tight cap to unscrew to get the housing assembly out of the tank. So... make sure your fuel pumpRELAY is good before spending $183 (I use autohausaz.com - best prices, they ship my orders fast) for the pump. I could hear my fuel pump relay "click" when I turned the key to "on", and then "click" again about a second later - supplying power to the non-functioningpump to pressure up the system. But this was a very unexact method - after I removed my pump I attached the electrical leads to a test light and was happy to see the light come on for a second when turning the key to "on": good fuel pump relay. Check the forums on how to best test the fuel pump relay - it's A LOT easier and CHEAPER than replacing a fuel pump for nothing!
Good luck, Bob. Ask me more questions if you would like. Let me know how thngs work out! ---Graham
