Newby with questions about 960
Looking at picking up a 96 960, with 190,xxx miles. Seems to be in good shape. Was wondering about the longevity of these cars if taken care of. Also, it currently has an automatic, I have seen pictures of the same car with a 5 speed, any knowledge on if that is a do-able swap for the average mechanically inclined person? And what might be involved with that?
The stereo has a button marked "chgr" I assume this means CD changer. If it has it, where would it be located? If it does not, can this just be added, as a plug and play unit, assuming I can find an operating changer?
Any other general knowledge anyone can pass along, to help me decide on this car, would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Where are you located? Some markets had a five speed manual on 960's, but it was mated with the four cylinder.
Some people outside of the US, are able to attach that trans to the 6 cylinder though. Outside of the US because the correct trans is only available overseas.
Timing belt is critical, pnp switch has problems, but is easily repaired, vacuum controller for the HVAC system is prone to failure, also to replace the heater core, the whole dash needs to be removed, including air bags. Not a fun job at all. Driver seat can have sliding fore and aft issues. Radiator is prone to sudden failure at the top hose neck.
The body seems to resist rust, even where I am in the rust belt of the US.
It is some what roomy for the standard of it's day.

Thanks for the replies. I am located in Washington state. And may have to re-think the manual conversion I guess. Have read on some other threads that certain toyotas, and ford manuals will work, with some modifications. And, if I get the car, will be sure to check the PNP switch, A/C system, and radiator. Thanks again for the help.
