OBDII codes for '96 960?

I have found several links to various obd codes, but I am confused by all the different models and engines. Will someone please point me to the code list for my new '96 960, (6 cyl).

Thanks...

David

Nobody's got a link to a list?

I don't think there is a special list of codes, most are standard across the auto line. Example P0305 is a misfire code for cylinder #5 no matter what kind of car you drive.

Be advised a fault code list does not really help troubleshoot the vehicle!

I extracted this conversion table from factory documentation. This does not cover any of the transmission codes that can be reported by obd2!

How do you mean, "does not really help"? What in the world are they for then?

They are just here to give clues. There are other parts of OBD2 that are helpful too, the I/M monitors and the "parameters" but they are really just clues.

It might be better to google the code and the car (ie. Volvo P0705) to find out what other people are doing about a fault code you read, than trying to guess the behavior of the control unit using the code list.

In the factory documentation there are some narratives about how the engine and transmission work and some of the self diagnostic routines that catch emissions fault codes generally. Then for every fault code there is a troubleshooting path and sometimes more explanation. This is the stuff that you have to read if you want to really work through it yourself without wasting time. But only fault codes that are emissions related will activate the MIL and be visible to the obd2 scanner. (P0705 is there because the PNP switch is emissions related).

For a 90s build/80s design car this ones a bit smarter than most domestic or japan cars. In addition to engine and transmission, SRS ABS Cruise and the memory seat are diagnosable with the volvo tools. The ECC was not updated on the 96x and still uses flashing lights. I have a j2534 gateway and heard that VIDA can use it to connect to the car but my laptop isn't powerful enough to install it, I hope to find a workaround and give this a shot sometime this winter.
