Removing 960 fuel pump
 

First- thanks to all here who help out.

Second- I have two questions regarding removing the fuel pump on my '95 960.

1. I have removed the retaining ring but CANNOT get the pump out. I mean it feels all but welded in. I can create a bit of movement using a pry between the top of the unit and the gasket underneath. Is this the best way to get the unit out?

2. The electrical connection at the top of the pump seems to be sealed in. There is no connector or "plug" pieces and the place where the wires go in doesn't seem to come apart anywhere. Do I disconnect this once the unit is out of the tank?

I'm very new to auto repair and appreciate any help.

Yes pry the sending unit out. But for the wiring you need to follow the wiring inside the trunk area. The plug is actually in the trunk.

Awesome- Thanks. So will a new unit have all that wiring as well or will I then disconnect it from the pump?

Depends on what you buy. Some replace the pump only. Some will replace the pump/sending unit assembly.

OK- So the issue is that I can't really get the unit out of the tank. The retaining ring is over the wires and there isn't any slack. So I can't take the ring out and the pump unit only comes out about 2 inches so I can't access the bottom to disconnect anything else.

Does the 960's have 2 fuel pumps? If not, does that mean the 1 and only pump is in the tank?

This appears to be a matter of some debate. It looks like until 1994 there were 2 pumps. From '95 on, one pump. But that info changes depending on who you ask.

Mine has one unit, accessed from just behind the rear seat. It is a large piece with a cap that has a molded port for the wires. The actual pump is below that and extends basically to the bottom of the tank.

Because of the way the wires are molded into the cap, I cannot remove the ring completely and thus cannot get the entire pump out of the tank.

This was the advice from another site...

I cannot access enough of the pump to see if there are upper and lower fasteners.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

To get that pump out of the tank you will need to get it up as far as possible, then you will have to twist it, that stalk is long and there is a hollowed out part in the fuel tank the pump fits into, because the stalk has a natural bend in it, it requires twisting as you lift it out. It will actually be more difficult to reinstall when that time come.

Yup- I get that part.

What do I do with the wires, or the whole top part of the pump? If I can get it all out of the tank, do I disconnect the top from the pump, or does the whole unit get replaced?

I think this is my confusion between the fuel pump and the sending unit. The parts guys here can't find a fuel pump sending unit in their computers. I'm guessing that what I buy would be the whole thing. Can anyone clarify this?

If its the latter, what about all the wires?

OK, so I'll not bore you all with the basic priciple I was missing there. Suffice it to say, the pump is out.:o

So any sage advice on replacing it? The volvo guy in town will use nothing but Bosch which they don't carry at the auto parts stores here. Are there any issues with the AutoZone or Schucks-O'Reilly parts here, or should I just suck it up and buy the Bosch?

where is the second pump located on the earlier models?

Glad you got the pump out. I have not used anything other than Bosch pumps.

Shelby it would be under the car like the 240's and 740's.

Now...The unit that came out of the tank has 2 portions. I'm assuming one is the pump and the other is the sending unit. Is this right?

Then- I've received numerous price quotes for a Bosch pump. This appears to be just that, the pump. How difficult is it to put the new pump on the sending unit? Any special tools needed?
