Wheel Bearing condition on Front
How would I check the bearings condition. I believe they are the sealed ones so I would have to replace the hub and bearing ?
The Car: '89 740 GLE Turbo. Approx. 300,000 mile. Seems like the front wheel bearing don't turns as easily as they should, but I don't really know how easily they should turn! Otherwise the car runs fine but maybe the gas mileage would improve with new bearings and I plan on taking a 3,000 mile trip. Would appreciate any information. Thanks Pat |
Are you sure the brake caliper isn't grabbing?

While replacing the pads I took off the hub to check the wheel bearing. Turning the bearing with me little fingers it seen not to spin as easily as it should. But then again I don't know how easily it should spin. The ceramic bearing on my bike spin really easy, But then again maybe that is not a good comparison.

As long as it's smooth, it's ok. It should not be easy to turn with fingers. If you purchased a new one, it will turn tight and smoothly. If it spins easily, it's probably worn and on it's way out.
The same goes for the timing blet rollers, if they spin freely and easily, it's time to replace them. If they are smooth and tight, they are good/near new. If they are hard to turn and rough or gritty, they need to be replaced. |
Thanks for the info. The bearing turns smoothly and tightly like you say. ( one side anyway and I'm going to assume the other side is the same )
A tune up and check the air in the tires and the old Volvo will be ready to go!! Thank You again Pat |
