1993 850 more horsepower
So ive read before you can increase the horse power or torque in a 850 by replacing the original throttle plate with a 960 throttle plate. Any truth to this? my 93 850 is minty clean, engine strong, and a non turbo, just trying to see if there is a way to get a bit more power. Im sure there isnt much i can do other than buy a turbo model, but I thought I would ask. Thanks

I've never heard that one. I suppose that if it bolts up you can try it but I doubt that you will achieve your goal since the engine computer may become confused. You'll just have to test and see.
I doubt that it will add enough horsepower to notice. |

Your 850 non turbo throttle is actually bigger than a turbo model. You can mod a non turbo throttle plate into a turbo throttle. Your NA is as fast as it can get. Dont change the intake keep the throttle and airbox on |
Modifications to factory settings typically result in a lot of money being wasted while the aftermarket manufacturer pours another glass of champagne.
Today's cars are not designed for performance mods and any "improvements" are made at the expense of something else. No one has the resources that the factory has for tuning the engine. Leave it alone. Now, if we were working on an old 350 Chevy engine, there are lots of things that will change horsepower. But, that's another era. |

even 25 years ago volvo engine management software on 850s were very sophisticated. Keep it OEM and make it last. My 850R has 350,00 miles and still runs smooth and fast. |
Assuming the '93 N/A 850 TB is the same as the other MYs (not positive but assume it is) then the ONLY difference between your N/A throttle plate and the 960/S90 plate is the latter does not have the plastic puck attached to it. The non-pucked plate will give slightly quicker throttle response at initial opening, but no other effects. It will not affect hp at all.

I believe the diameter is much bigger to. Its definately not worth the trouble to swap and remove the plastic puck. Exhaust and a drop in filter is about all that will make any difference to power and not much. Keep it OEM |

The N/A already has the 3" throttle body. The only difference between the two plates is a plastic puck that helps with throttle response. I SERIOUSLY doubt you will see, feel, experience anything making that change. You can modify your existing if you want by removing the pucks and brazing up the holes. (I should have read gdogs comments before posting, redundant info)
