5 Speed Manual Transmission Fluid Change

So, I decided I'm going to change my transmission oil. Volvo recommends, of course, Volvo fluid, which as far as I have searched is basically 75w90 (I have no clue if its GL-4 or GL-5!) But, I was wondering if this was the best option, or if anyone else here has an alternative that is comparable or better than the Volvo fluid.

I have seen some discussion about GL-5 working in this transmission, so, does GL-5 or GL-4 (or both?) work in this transmission.

I have also seen some discussion about using full synthetic 5w30 engine oil. I don't really understand this one, seeing as how that seems to be such a lighter weight, but I thought I'd still ask.

Lastly, how exactly do I go about changing the fluid? Is it hard to do? Where is the drain and where is the fill port?

Thanks in advance!

You want to use GL-4 not GL-5. GL-5 is corrosive and can damage yellow metals (aka brass). I have been using Royal Purple with no complaints. 75w-90.

The amount is 2.2qts

The drain plug is on the lower back facing the drivers wheel. I use a piece of cardboard to direct the fluid down so it does not shoot out and get all over the sub-frame(another story).

To fill, take the reverse switch out and use a funnel.

Where is the reverse switch? Is it easy to remove?

Volvo recommends a full synthetic. Here is what Volvo says about what weight.

CAUTION: DO NOT use SAE 15W-40 oil in extremely low ambient
temperatures.
LUBRICATION SPECIFICATIONS TABLE
Application Fluid Specifications
Coolant ............................. 50/50 Mix Ethylene Glycol
and Distilled Water
Brake Fluid ....................... DOT 4 Or DOT 4+ Brake Fluid
Engine Oil
Ambient Temperature
Less Than 68F (20C) .................. SAE 5W-30 API SH/CD
-4F To 100F (-20 To 38C) .......... SAE 10W-30 API SH/CD
Greater Than 14F (-10C) ............. SAE 15W-40 API SH/CD

So weight depends on where you are and what temperature is expected.

Can I use a Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil from Autozone that apparently "meets or exceeds GL-4 and GL-5" and is designed for cars which require either GL-4 or GL-5?

Also, where is that reverse switch, and how hard is it to fill from there?

Reverse switch is located on the top of the transmission, close to the shift levers. Look for a 2-pronged plug pointing straight up.

Go to Napa Auto Parts and get MTL or Royal Purple. I cant speak for Mobil1, what I do know is that their Auto trans fluid was pulled from California for not meeting some spec they advertised. I use Mobil1 in my engine but am leary for the trans.
