850 engine performance
Does anyone know of any cheap way that I can get more performance out of my engine, without turbo or supercharging it. Like the air filter (excluding cold air intakes), spark plugs, etc. How much more power can the transmission handle. And would the engine cooperate with a manual transmission if I were to swap in the future. Oh, and the vehicle in question is a 1993 850.

not to sound mean but you will have to sell and get a turbo model if you really want a fast 850. doing tunes to get performance out of a regular 850 is personally waste of money. doing a tune to a turbo equiped is the best way to go as the transmission can handle up to 300hp l think.
What he said.
And doing a manual swap ... isn't much there to be gained without doing expensive mods to the engine to increase power. The auto is good to about 300 from what I've read and I don't think you'll get anywhere near than on a non turbo'd 850.

What he said, sell it.
The main problem is that the things you might be able to do to a small block Chevy or Ford or a Honda/Acura just don't exist for a Volvo and your choice of limiting it to "cheap" pretty much limits you to putting in a clean fresh air filter and closing the hood.
You want speed and power you need to start over and get one with a turbo and then plan on spending a lot of money. Once you're producing some serious power and torque that manual transmission starts to make sense. You want cheap, get a Honda, tons of parts available new and used and much easier and cheaper to modify.
