850 stops, odd temp guage behaviour

Help! My '95 850 10 valve non turbo (UK) cuts out when warm. The engine turns over but there is no spark at the coil, no power at the connections, and when I turn the key the temp guage goes to halfway, pauses half a second, then goes to the top for two seconds, then down to zero. Happens every time the key is turned on. Every time it happens the engine is showing normal temperature, never overheating. After a while, 40 - 90 minutes, the temp guage behaves normally and the car will re-start. Codes are 1-1-1 and the lambda light is not on. This started in February- it would break down after no more than 10 miles. Someone said it was the ECT sensor so I replaced that and the thermostat and it was OK for two weeks, hundreds of miles, but now the trouble is back. Apparently the ECU (there is only 1 ECU on my car) works the temp guage, cooling fan and just about everything else on the car, and someone said that the ECU thinks the engine is overheating so it cuts the sparks, but in that case why doesn't it turn on the cooling fan? Is my ECU going bad? Last time it happened I took out the ECU and it felt hot, although not too hot to touch - is that normal? I have done all the normal checks, cleaned the idle valve, breather, throttle body etc, checked all the vacuum hoses, etc. Any ideas? Thanks, Marvin[sm=boohoo.gif]

RE: 850 stops, odd temp guage behaviour

1-1-1 is no problem at all.

Will let someone else chime in to diagnose..
