850 turbo stalling, starting problems
Hi i have a 95 volvo 850 turbo with over 220000 miles on it. It just starting stalling on me randomly. It first started dieing on me and it sounded and felt like the fuel was cutting out and stalling that way.
After replacing fuel relay, fuel injector pressure regulator, distributor cap & rotor, coil, spark plugs & wires fuel filter some air lines. I've tested fuel pump and its good. I have great fuel pressure as well. It will now idle for about 1-5 mintues sometimes longer period and then just die like i turned the key off and if you start it it's hit or miss sometime it will start right back up or it will not even start at all but just crank. I'm am very lost on what to do next. I used the cars diagnostic system which it has built in and it says I have a threw a code for a purge valve could that cause it ? and my maf is fine as well So idk what else to replace. Please Help, I need this car fixed asap and I'm so lost thanks! |
Did you replace the fuel pump relay with a new one? When the car fails to start, do you have good fuel pressure?
If you have a CEL, what codes do you have? You also have a OBD-II port, you can have the codes read at an auto parts store or you can get your own scan tool and read them yourself. |
Sounds like RSPI is pointing you in a good direction. It sounds like it is either fuel or spark related....

Well, you still did not answer my question... It can be a number of things. Try 2 things; 1. Answering questions that people that are trying to help you ask, 2. Writing in the English language not text code.

Sorry i was writing it off of my phone.
I have good fuel pressure when car fails to start.fuel relay was replaced. And i currently dont have any codes. That is why i am lost. i am replacing all my vacuum lines today to see if any of that helps. ive heard a simple line or two could be the problem. i recently replaced my fuel filter So maybe it got clogged ? im am also taking it off to see if its clogged or not. any other suggestions ? thanks |
Fuel Filter?

if it was the fuel filter when it does run would it bogg out ? instead of it sounding like i just turned the key to off when it dies ?

I'd look for bad wires near the fuel pump access door. Then I would check the battery cables from end to end.
There is a chance that you have a cam or crank sensor going bad. They usually tosses a code but it can fail to do that. I have also heard that a MAF can cause a car to stall. They usually tosses a code as well. You also have a chance of a bad NEW fuel pump relay. But if you have confirmed that the pressure is good when it stalls, it's not likely it. |
ok ill have to check the wires and battery cables
is there anyway to test the cam & crank sensor to see if its going bad ? |
ok its now stalling when it gets up to temp. its not overheating my gauge works and its gets to the half way point and then shuts off what could cause that ?
could cam or crank sensor do that ? thanks |
Coolant Temp Sensor?

850 Turbo Stalling
I bought a really nice '94 Volvo 850 turbo at an auto auction really cheap. I drove it home and it ran fine. After a couple of days it started stalling when cold, then it started doing it all the time. Most of the forums I read said it was probably the fuel pump relay. I shopped around and some of the online stores were really cheap but I wanted it right now. Strangely, it was $10 cheaper at the Volvo dealer ($57) than at Napa ($67).
Anyway the new fuel pump relay did nothing.... BUT in working on it I noticed that the relay was a bit loose on it's socket. I cut a small piece of soft foam and put it on top of the relay and screwed the lid down to put a bit of light pressure on it, Bingo! it runs like a champ! It was a bad connection at the base of the relay all the time. |
