'93 850 MAJOR PROBLEM, NEED HELP!!!!

While driving on the highway, we stopped at a stop sign and the car started running rough(like mis-fire) and then it stalled and wouldn't start again. The car has spark, fuel, and the timing is fine. The code shows mass air flow sensor. I took it to an import mechanic and they said that two cylinder walls were scored. Does this sound right? There was no oil burning and there was also a small tear in the air intake tube. Would this cause the engine to run lean enough to score the cylinder walls? Please help!!! We don't know whether to replace the car or just buy a new sensor ($300).

If the code was for a Mass flow sensor. Unplug the mass flow sensor and start it. If it idles fine plug it back in.Then if it idles like crap then the sensor is bad.
Was the induction ripped bad?
It would make it run rich and not lean.
Replace the hose.

Did they do a major tear down?

If not then how do they know the cylinder wall are scored?

I was scratching my head on that one also TECH. The garage quotes a $300.00 repair cost and yet the engine was torn down to asertain the scored cylinder walls???? Pretty inexpensive labour I would venture................

Check *All* intercooler hoses for leaks or holes. Go over each one by hand. I'm betting there's a busted hose causing this. Scored cylinder walls sounds unlikely to me.

Could the tech possibly have a fancy camera to look in the sparkplug whole with? Just a guess on how they would say the walls were scored, but it seems fishy.

They said they did a compression test and that there were two dead cylinders because of scoring on the cylinder wall. I've tried to start it and it won't run at all. There seems to be an excessive amount of fuel on the spark plugs.
I tried starting it before and after I removed the air flow sensor - it seems like its wants to start but it's just not catching.

The lifters might have bled down. Let it sit for like Half a day. Put the gas to the floor before turning it over. Then crank it while holding the gas pedal to the floor and see if it starts.

Thanks for all the info, however, I've tried everything that was mentioned here and it still won't start. I've heard it might be the CMP sensor at the back of the exhaust cam. If the snesor's are faulty, will this cause the car not to run at all????

Yes that will cause the car not to start at all if it is bad.
