'94 850 Heater dies after working at full power

The heater on my Volvo 850 keeps dying after working a minute or two at full power. I have to turn off the ignition for it to start working again. Any suggestions, what might be wrong?

tech 10-12-2009 07:58 AM

The blower stops or no heat?

boxpin 10-12-2009 08:29 AM

Same problem for me except mine is the A/C on full. The Blower motor just shuts off. You have to turn off the ignition then turn it back on and its fine. Its like a reset is going on. I have a Climate control system

tech 10-12-2009 08:39 AM

The blower motor might be pulling to many amps and the A/C control module might be shutting it down.

boxpin 10-12-2009 08:40 AM

Thats what it appears to be. Do you know where that module is and what it looks like?

tech 10-12-2009 08:47 AM

The climate module is the controller in the dash.

Tom. 10-12-2009 11:13 AM

It just stops blowing. The AC is not working and I'm usually have it around ~25C anyway.

Tom. 10-14-2009 08:42 AM

Any ideas?

tech 10-14-2009 08:39 PM

Sounds like either blower motor or resistor.

boxpin 10-15-2009 03:06 PM

Ok, it got cold here and I kicked on the fan to high...ran for one minute then the fan shut off.

Keep in mind all other aspects of the system are working, its the physical fan that shuts off.

tech 10-15-2009 07:49 PM

When it shuts off check for power at the motor. If there is power the motor is bad.

Is it very hard to remove the front panel to access the motor?

tech 11-08-2009 03:01 PM

It is not that hard.

boxpin 11-09-2009 10:41 PM

In the next few days I am going to solve this multi thread problem that many have experienced. My car does it so I am going to take it apart and get to the bottom of this. I will post the results.

Tom. 11-18-2009 03:07 PM

I would be very glad if you let us know how you will have done it.

Tom. 11-25-2009 05:50 AM

Any updates?

Or maybe suggestions on how to remove what to access the motor? Thought I would buy the motor from junkyard and try to fix it, but I am unsure how to access it.

tech 11-25-2009 07:51 PM

You have to remove the lower dash panel and the knee bolster to access the blower motor.

boxpin 11-26-2009 01:10 AM

I swapped the control unit with the other one I have and the fan stopping has stopped. I have the module in front of me but have not had time to sit down and disect it to find if there is a way to fix these without buying a new one. I was suggested that the problem may be my blower motor, I am not so sure now since the issue is gone and the blower motor is the same. It could be a contributing factor though.
You can remove your all from under the dash, no need to pull the glove box. As tech said, bolster and panel and you can get to it from there.

Tom. 11-26-2009 02:41 PM

And if I succeed in removing the panel, then how do I check the motor? Let it work at full power for some time or something? I'll be doing it on the weekend, will let you know how it went as well.

I have the same problem dammit. Let me know any thing you find out. I am pulling mine apart tonight!
