Default Having some major windshield wiper problems.

I'm having an issue with my WWs. The one of the driver's side only stays in contact with the windshield until about the time it swipes in front of me. At that point it doesn't have contact with the glass. It's happened so gradually I didn't really notice until the other day. I changed out the windshield wipers twice, and tightened the nut at the base of the wiper arm, and have tried pushing the arm down onto the windshield.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions on a fix.

Thanks!
Michael

By the way, the crack has been there since I got the car and never affected the WWs any before.

If physically bending the arm closer to the windshield does not work, the spring in the arm may have lost tension and will not hold the arm tight enough to the windshield. Not sure if you can replace just the spring, or if the whole arm needs to be replaced.

I had this happen with my 850 too. On mine replacing the spring wouldn't have really helped because the arm was resting on the stops built onto the arm. I'm sure it's not 100% correct but here is what I did:

1) Take off the wiper arms off their shafts (10mm I think)
2) Disconnect the drain hoses from the cowling
3) Remove the five Torx screws holding down the cowling
4) Lift out the cover
5) The wiper motor assembly is held in place with three bolts. There are 2 on the ends that if you loosen them you can add washers under the third to tilt the whole assembly, which will cause the wipers to make better contact. Mine took 3 washers but now my wipers work awsome.

With the cowl off you can change the cabin air filter while you’re at it (if your 850 has one).

This is a known issue with the wipers on the these cars. You can either replace the arm or do the VolvoSpeed fix.

I had the same problem. I took the wiper arm off, put it in a vise and bent it a little 1/2 way down the arm, then put it back on. Works great.

I did not want to do to much to fix it and did not want to strain or break the motor by putting pressure on it while it was installed.
