Abs light / shift lock

1) I have a 1996 Volvo Glt Wagon with 90,000 miles yesterday, I went to shift the shifter would not come out of park and the Abs light was light (Abs Sytems replaced by Volvo 1year ago), hit the brake pedal a few times light goes out and able to shift doing this everytime I start now, this car is my family any suggestion before she has to go back to the dealer for service also shift lock wasserviced at 85000 miles and all recalls were supposablly done by dealer last service 85000 use only Volvo parts.

2) engine light on again it and everytime it is the fuel recovery system valve been replaced by dealer 3 times no charge and suggestion how to stop this from happening the dealer service manage said that year this is a common problem.

1.Maybe the electrical part of the ignition switch is bad.

2. What is the code?

Or Autozone can pull the codes.

Not unless you have an OBDII scanner.

Next time, tryturning the key back toward you slightly. Not to the off position, but just closer to it.I have this problemon my 95 850 - I just have to give it a slight twist back after starting to get the ABS light to go out and the car into drive. I think it'scommon on 850s. It's just the electrical part of the ignition switch wearing out.

There is a way to fabricate home-made OBD-II to OBD-I converter. The only thing I'm not sure is which pin is for the fuel control system. See attached, and wait until someone could tell you which pin is the right pin for fuel control diagnostic.

As to the shifter not coming out of Park, it could possibly be a faulty micro switch.

Scan-tech seems to have poor reputation, though.

Thank you all for the information system seems to be working fine for now. Still have a major issue with fuel evap system check engine light back on again this problem keeps coming back been to the dealer will have it fixed again seems a valve keeps going bad they replace it free(part only)charge labor I get a feeling they are shooting in the dark about the problem because the code the I have seen read leak

RE: Abs light / shift lock

The gas cap seems to have been the most popular cause for the EVAP code. I've circled possible culprits within the system. Visually check for the condition of hoses & ensure connection security. The charcoal canister rarely fails, unless it has physical damage. I'm not sure where in the system the Rollover valve is located at. And the only device within the system that has electrical connection is the EVAP valve, so either the valve itself has failed or something upstream of the valve is causing out-of-range conditions.

The electrical portion of the ignition switch is only $53 USD through FCP Groton (below) and it only takes about 15 min to replace. There is a link to a great write-up on Volvospeed below as well. This switch caused the same issues on my 95 - would not come out of park and the ABS light would stay on. Good luck!
