Another PCV question

Okay so im putting everything back together now, and noticed an issue. The hoses that run down to the PTC. The two on the PTC end connect fine, but when i get back on the flame trap end, the smaller hose supposedly goes to a vacuum line on the left side of the intake manifold. Here's the problem: i HAVE no vacuum line connection on the left side of the intake manifold. Can someone advise me as to where this is supposed to go? I'm assuming that it should go on the various vacuum lines that are on the tree that bolts into the intake manifold on the RIGHT side, but I'd like to know for sure. Any advice would be helpful....I assume that if it does go there, I need to shorten that hose up considerably, right?

Oh, and to clarify, my car is a '94 turbo wagon, and it has the odd metal tube thing that runs all over the place under my spark plug cover and down to the ptc. I'm assuming that's the reason that they dont match up? Is it okay to just remove that thing and route straight ot the manifold, or do i need to work out a way to incorporate that into the tubing?

Sorry I don't understand. Do you have pics? Which instructions are you using?

to steal a pis from another thread here: this:

Attachment 2687

is whats under my spark plug cover. The tube from the PTC runs into this on one side and runs to a vacuum tee on the right side of my manifold. I'm wondering if I just need to split the shield around the two tubes and pull the smaller one out, then shorten it and attach it at the tee, or if i need to keep the metal tube thing under the plug cover and find a way to route through that.

What year 850 do you have? I have a 94 with a metal tube over the top of my engine that connects to my PTC and that's the equivilant to what you don't have.

You can either leave the small one in there or take it out. I used the way that it was put in there previously.

Legends: i have a 94 turbo wagon. I have the metal tube over the spark plug cover. I'm asking if i have to use that, or if I can eliminate it and just re-route the hose from the new kit to the right side of the manifold instead of connecting it to the nonexistant vacuum port on the left side of the manifold that is supposedly there.

And what are you talking about when you said "leave the small one there"? I have no clue what you mean....sorry.

Legendsecko87 06-10-2010 11:51 PM

Oh, sorry that was confusing. The second hose on your new hose running from the oil-trap to the PTC, the smaller one, I took out. It is all up to you how you want to run it. Like I said, I have a '94 so I know what you're talking about. I personally like using the stock system, even thoug it's a bit weird, I like staying stock if it works. If you want to change it, remove the metal wire thing and then route a vacuum hose from the back of the PTC, where the nipple is, to the BOTTOM nipple on the rear of the vacuum tree.

94 intake manifolds didn't have the nipple on the side of the manifold, it was in 95+ they started that. Just skip the metal tube on the valve cover and route the vac line to the vac tree.

Gilber: thanks - thats what I did. I went ahead and removed the metal loop under the spark plug cover and just cut the protective rubber that was on the two tubes and pulled out the smaller one at the spot where it turns the corner around the block. Once I get everything put back together, I'll cut it to length and reattach it. The reason this PCV system replacement is taking me all week is because I'm taking the time while I have stuff apart to replace things that are easy to access right now. I'm replacing ALL the vacuum lines I can get at right now, since they are old and probably cracked. I also cleaned out the EGR and throttle body and sent the intake manifold home with a machinist friend of mine for some porting, polishing, and then painting the outside. It's a lot of extra work, but I think it'll be worth it in the long run. Nothing like having piece of mind.

Yeah, there's nothing like having a piece of a mind, I'd be pissed if I was your friend knowing you had a piece of his mind. lol. jk.

Thinking out loud. If I am reading this thread right, the smaller hose in question in later models connects to the intake manifold down stream from the throttle body.

Being downsteam from the throttle body, I figured this location (in contrast to the vac tree) would have a greater negative pressure when the throttle plate is closed at idle and result in a greater return of crank case blow off during idle.

Any thoughts or comments?
