Another problem has arisen HELP!!!!!

When my engine is running there is an intermittent clicking.I tookthe car to a friend who is a big Volvo freak and he wa stumped!!!! He said it sounds like the power steering pump is re pressureising itself, This to me does not sound good. there is no problem with the steering it is still smooth and there are no un nerving noises on full lock. Should i get it checked out or is there an easy fix?

I am glad this forum is here. If it wasnt for the Volvo family i would be lost!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Does it change with the engine RPM?

No its just the same all the time, its not using more fluid and it doesnt affect the running of the car, still goes like a train!!!! steers well stops well, was wondering if it was something serious or not.

I would keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse.
I wouldn't be able to help much more without being at the car hearing it myself.

Looks like an opportunity for a trip to the UK.. :-) I'm sure you could use a vacation, Tech... (that'd be a pretty expensive diagnostic check though)

Maybe the ac is kicking on and its low on freon so It clicks on and then off and then on and then off...

To add to the above post, try running the engine with the A/C off and the vent selector out of the defrost, as the defrost position keeps the A/C compressor on.

If you've been running the engine without the A/C or defrost, and if the noise is still coming from the PWS reservoir area, it is probably something trivial, but like Tech says we cannot determine unless we actually take a look at your car.

If the PWS is functioning fine and no drop in the fluid level is found, the PWS is of no concern. As for now, visually inspect around the serpentine accessory drive belt to see if there is anything loose.

Also, try inspecting inside the timing belt cover to make sure nothing looks unusual. Do this with the engine off. Remove one 12mm bolt that is holding the timing belt cover and wiggle it upward to expose the timing belt area.

These steps may not be necessary, as the problem seems trivial, judging from the info given so far, and since the clicking pace does not change with the change in RPM.

Please keep us updated.

It turns out that its the AC apparently it is low on gas, set it to demist the front screen it started clicking, turned the dial to blow at my feet it stopped, a re gas is about 60 pounds i think so an easy and not too expensive fix, cheers for the info AGAIN, lee

RE: Another problem has arisen HELP!!!!!

Hello mate,

Glad the problem has been identified:).

According to the factory manual, the system takes 6.8 US oz of PAG (compressor) oil, and 26.4 US oz of refrigerant (R134a).

I would check the system pressure at the LOW side. The pressure at the low side should be between 25-33 PSI (1.8-2.3kg/cm2).

If you do not possess basic knowledge on air-conditioning system, I would let a pro check the system for you as there is a possible danger of accidental discharge of the refrigerant, which could give you a permanent health damage (frostbite).

Let us know if we can further assist you.

Cheers,

JPN
