What's the feasability of doing an auto to manual tranny swap in a '93 850? I'm not really thinking about it now, but my auto has 235,xxx miles on it and I figure if I have to rebuild it at some point, I may look into a swap. I'd prefer a 5-speed anyway

I am not certain as to how tranny swap is done on 850. There may be differences in ECU's and other components. I know some people have done it on different cars but haven't heard anyone having done it on 850. As I'm not into mods, other members would be able to help you better than I could.

If transmission fluid condition & level are maintained properly, an auto tranny can go a long way unless abused. But I too, like manual shifters better.

The transmission is fine, no problems that I'm aware of (knock on wood), the fluid is nice and translusent red, doesn't smell bunt and I'm sure that it's got some time left in it. I was curious is all

 

Actually this is a fairly common swap, but mostly guys get a Turbo w/o a five speed and non- turbo with a five speed as a donor car and put the five speed in the Turbo. There is a complete write-up on how to do it on volvospeed.com. If I ever replace the engine on one of my R's I am considering converting it to a five speed. A five speed on a non-turbo 850 is fairly common. I don't think it would be that tough, but a little more than I would tacke by myself.
