Default Automatic Transmission having a hard time shifting out of first

Alright, so I was driving my car today, I pulled out onto my street and starting going up a hill, the car would not switch out of first gear, eventually it did, but I think now the transmission shifts a little hard and the performance has suffered a little a bit. What could be the problem?

Now it only happened once, but about a week ago I accidentally did grind my gears >_< I thought I had the car in park and it started rolling backwards and i panicked and shifted it into park.

Is the transmission arrow on the dash flashing?
Is the check engine light on?

Then the tranny might be on its way out.
See if it throws a code in the next day or so.

When you mean "On its Way Out" do you mean I am going to have to replace the transmission? How much is that going to cost >_<

Also what do you mean by a "code"

Yes I mean it might need to be replaced.
Price depends on if you can do it or not.
If you can they can be had for about $400.00 to $600.00
But if you need someone to do it for you think about close to $1500.00 to $2000.00.

If the transmisson see an error then it will make the arrow flash and check engine light come on.
That will set codes in the computers leading to whats wrong.

There still might be a problem with the hydrolic system or a hard part (clutches)
Honestly I would drive it till it won't move anymore. I really hate to say that but not sure of condition of your car and if it would in your opinion be work it to fix it.

I have to put a tranny in my Yellow car soon. I am waiting for it to get worse before doing it.

Well I bought the car a month ago, I am turning 17 next week, so I need this car to last me a while. I did the Car Fax on it and it came out clean. No accidents ect. The car is in amazing cosmetic condition and I never get any check engine lights in it. I love the 850s and its my dream car. What do you think I should do?

My transmission is having issues too. It's hard to say how long it will last. It's been getting progressively worse over 40,000 miles and 5 years. Transmission issues on our cars are expensive. Volvos are good when they are taken care of, I beat mine as a youth when it was my parents car (revved high and then went from neutral to drive, yes I'm paying for that NOW!!! Ugh!!!) and the car got it's first taste of new ATF at 144,000 miles (Volvo's fault, didn't recommend changing it).

It downshifts hard from 3rd to 2nd and upshifts hard at 3rd to forth. Kinda weird. I added Lucas Transmission stop slip and that seems to quiet it down a bit, along with 3 drain and fills. It used to drop into neutral when stopping however the drain/refill and lucas has pretty much nipped that it in the butt, which means no slipping any more.

I've heard it might just be a solenoid, although I'm not sure if there are any Volvo transmission specialists around. On the plus side when doing the drain/fills there is zero metal on the magnet, that has to be a good sign.

I tried the lucas as well. It was good for about 1 month then back to the same ol stuff. When slowing down to a stop it goes into neutral till I hit the gas to take off.

You might want to try adding it to yours and see if it helps.

I will defiantly try it, I don't want to just drive it till it breaks down because I want to have this car for a while, I love it. My friend is going to check the ATF fluid on Sunday and I will go from there.

Hey Tech, have you actually rebuilt one of these transmissions before? If so, what was the ballpark cost of the parts? And did you do a write-up? (I searched but couldn't find one here). One day, I'm sure I'll have to deal with my transmission (though it runs perfectly right now), and I'm always willing to rebuild something like that if the parts are available and there's a good write-up to go with it...

No I haven't done one yet.
I have a DVD version of a disk for a walk through for doing it.
I would also need a source for parts before I could try it.

Tech, interesting... where did you get this DVD? (I'd think the parts would be available from the dealership at least, wouldn't they?)

Someone gave me a copy of the disk. Not sure where they got it from. Maybe they got it from Toyota or something.
The Dealers only sell entire transmission assembly's I don't think they sell rebuild kits at all.

850 overhaul kit

I found that a few weeks ago

I don't know if it includes the solenoids however, as according to a few they are what is causing the problem.
