Ok, my '95 850 Wagon has a new engine - with only 58K miles on it!! And runnin' great.... a couple annoying problems though....

1. The heater fan only runs on the 4th setting - I checked the fuse for the 1-3 controls and nothing. Is there a resistor elsewhere? Where do I find it? Anyone know of a nice picture of it - or what it takes to replace it?

and...

2. The radio only says "OFF" and won't allow me to enter the code (which I know).

HELP!

Greetings from Vermont.

1) The resistor should be located right by the blower motor housing. I've never had to replace it (I did replace the squeaky blower, though), and I think there are a few posts regarding the same problem.

2) Hmm, did you press the buttons with numbers on them? I assume you did. Can you give it a try with the engine running, or did you already try it? Someone else should be able to help you with this problem better than I could, as I never had trouble resetting the radio.

The resistor is bad.
It is located to the left of the blower motor under the dash on the passenger side.

The radio issue you have to leave the key in the accessory position for 2 to 4 hours till it says CODE. Someone tried installed the wrong code to many times.

Hi, I had the same problem. The reason the resistors burn out is normally a sticky fan bearing - you can remove it by taking out the glove box first, and if it's not too bad you can oil the bearings with several applications of a light oil. Avoid getting oil on the commutator though.

RADIO PROBLEM - Got help with it by searching the forums - which is sometimes tough for me to do - still learning it. Thanks a heap.

FAN PROBLEM:

Ok - that makes sense - the fan had started to squeel a bit - then I guess the resistor burnt out because of the power surge problems that it was probabaly dealing with.

Now to find this resistor... I opened it up - took out the glovebox even and took a photo.... are there 2 resistors? Are they the little blue boxes? Are they available only at Volvo? Are there any substitutes available at say a Napa or Autozone?

Am I even in the right ballpark here?

And the fan squeeling is probably what needs to be lubed.... how do I do that? Where is it located? Are you talking about the fan (right side of picture) behind the bundle of wires? - open that black casing up and lube the fan? (which i'm assuming is behind there)....

Obviously a newbie under the dash.... thanks for all the help!!

The blower*:
Behr (German): $139
Aftermarket: $115

*I replaced mine with Behr. I took out the original, cleaned it thoroughly, lubed the shafts and the noise went away only for a day or two, then it came back. It is stressful to take it out twice, and many people have had the same problem, so it may be better just to replace it.

The resistor for ACC seems to have cooling fins (heat sink), and is obviously different from the one in MCC. I'll attach both pics from Groton.

Resistor
ACC: $109 (genuine Volvo)
MCC: $56 (genuine Volvo)

As for parts, I wouldn't get them from generic stores, except for routine consumables such as oil, light bulbs, ATF, etc... Volvos, as withmany imports, are extremely sensitive to the quality of parts and cheap aftermarket parts are generally guaranteed to fail prematurely.

When you work on the blower section, make sure to disconnect the battery and be careful with pax-side SRS. Also, make sure to have radio codes.

I hope this helps. By the way, those blue things look more like relays. Wait till others jump in for identification, or you could tell by looking at the pics from Groton.

The resistor is in the picture, barely. JPN is correc the blue things are relays. The resistor is to the right of those it is the black bit just to the left of that black metal bracket. You can only see the one screw and part of the black housing in your picture.
