With the engine cold (overnight is ideal), check the electrolyte level in each cell. Wear acid-resistant gloves & eye protection; the electrolyte is extremely acidic/caustic. If the level is too high, use a syringe to remove excessive fluid or have it done at a shop.
If the electrolyte level is not too high, yes the voltage regulator may be shot and overcharging the battery. If you have a digital multimeter check for voltage; it should be 13.5-14.0V or somewhere around there. Over-voltage will only give you negatives.
A voltage regulator is sold separately, but considering its price and overall effect, I would just replace the alternator with a rebuilt Bosch for about $230 with core. Pep-Boys sells them with lifetime warranty.
