Blower intermittent

Hi All,

Recently I've been having issues with my blower and also to some degree, temperature control BUT, the biggest issue is this;

For no apparent reason, it will stop blowing altogether, then with random pushing of buttons, switching of the ignition on/off, it returns. Does this suggest loose connection or, maybe the control unit on the dash, or.... what??

Anyone else had this on/off problem, bad time of year not to know if its going to work.

Thanks

RE: Blower intermittent

Most likely the blower motor and resistor are bad.
The blower motor pulls to many Amps and the control module shuts it off.

So, I see blower motors and cages on e-bay for around the $130 mark.

I could grab one of these and install pretty easily I presume, am I right in thinking its behind the glovebox panel?

Sound reasonable value and logical approach to you Tech?

Thanks for your help mate.

It's pretty straightforward. The hardest part is figuring out how to take all the connectors off the motor. If you buy a brand new motor, it's a good idea to break in the motor by bench testing it for about 5 minutes to get rid of some of the brush material that will come out on start up. If can be corrosive to the evaporator so you should get rid of it by bench testing before you install it.

Yes it is behind the glove box area and easy to replace.

Thanks RP,

I found one in CT and will order it when they open in the morning, its on ebay but brand new. I'll run it before fitting it in to the glovebox space and I'll draw a map of the connectors I pull off the old one in the hope that I'll have less trouble that way.

Tech,

Thank you!!

I'll order the one from CT and fit is as soon as it arrives, I dare not use the car tonight because leaving the office at 4:30am without the ability to defrost or heat would not be a great idea.

One last question and please forgive my ignorance but I know nothing about this, you talk about the blower motor and resistors, are they one unit or is just replacing the blower and cage not all that I need to do?

Thanks again,

The resistor controls all the lower speeds of the blower motor. High speed is direct 12v.
Alot of times when the blower motor goes bad it also takes out the resistor.

Where is the resistor located Tech?

If I'm going to replace the blower motor, maybe I best be ready to replace this 'resistor' too.

Can you let me know what I need?

Many thanks and apologies for the dumb content of my questions.

RE: Blower intermittent

Well, I went ahead and ordered the blower motor, because and correct me if I'm wrong, the fact thats its intermittent and works fine some of the time, might suggest that when the blower worker is active, the resistors are still working, all fans speeds being operational.

We'll see I guess.

Thanks again.

The resistor is to the left of the blower motor. It looks like a black box from the outside. It has a T-15 screw holding it in.It also has 2 plugs.

Thanks Tech and RC,

The blower motor arrived today and I just installed it, not a bad job to do at all, and I now have heat, and for that matter, better heat!!!

So, thanks Guys!!
