Hi Folks, just thought I'd give you an update, I took the 850 to an independent Volvo specialist who thought the brakes were not good (in fact they thought it would fail an MOT miserably), we are going to try replacing the master cylinder and see if it cures the problem....will keep you updated.

I did a small test today, and I was going about 30 MPH and I slammed the brakes as hard as I could. Even at 100%, the car's still moving forward (slowing down a ton, but not to a complete stop as would newer cars). Would make sense if the booster/cylinder is broke because it's not converting into enough braking pressure...

RE: braking issues..
Hi Jimmy,
Under full-braking at30 mph, the tyres should lock up (unless ABS kicks in) or it should stop in no time.
Last time when they were serviced, do you know if OEM parts were installed? Also, was the system bled?
If the booster was shot, the pedal should feel harder than normal, as you're not getting vacuum assistance. This can be simulated by stopping the engine while the car is in motion, you'll notice that the pedal suddenly becomes harder (as well as steering, so do this on an open road with no other cars, should you decide to do it).
Good night,
JPN

I know nothing about the service history as I just bought the car in October...However, the car was serviced at the local dealer every 4000 miles. I should call them this weekend...I think if I give them my VIN, they can tell me what service has been performed...But I'm sure the parts are all OEM.
The brake pedal is very very soft. A soft tap only turns on the lights, and doesn't trigger the brake. Wheras for the gas, if I give it a tap, my rpms will go up slightly (much more sensitive).
The Pedal is soft pretty much the whole way, and at the end, i'm using pretty much all my leg strength to push it down, and even then, the braking power just isn't there. If it's not the booster, I think the problem must be the master cylinder...Now i'm very curious as to JimSmiths results....If he fixes his problem, I'm definetely going to get my brakes fixed...
What do you mean by "stopping the engine while the car is in motion"? Turn off the ignition while you're moving? I know that if you turn your steering wheel a lot while the car is off, your steering will stiffen up...

Hi Jimmy,
Still up are you? I'm about to go to sleep, zzz...
>What do you mean by "stopping the engine while the car is in motion"? Turn off the ignition while you're moving?
That's exactly right. As you stop the engine, there is no vacuum assist, so you can feel that the pedal gets stiffer. I might have been wrong[8D], the pedal might feel softer if the booster is shot, as vacuum is leaking and not providing assist.
I too wait for Jim's results to see if new master cylinder solves the problem.

RE: braking issues..
Hi Folks, sorry for not updating you all but unfortuntely I've made no progress with the car due a recurrent back injury, the car hasn't moved for two weeks. I have however found out some prices for themaster cylinderon the net, will hope to get things sorted in a couple of weeks.

Hello Mate,
I hope you recover and feel better soon. We will be anxiously waiting for your reply.
I have worked for British Airways as a contractor for about 11 month here at O'Hare Airport in Chicago. The station manager, who has a great sense of humor, has shown me a great respect and it was pleasant to work for them. Unfortunately, I am forced to leave the country due to the expiration of my work visa. The immigration policy in the United States is all screwed up and they are allowing non-English speaking people to become citizens/permanent residents and kick out people like me[8D]. I heard from a BA colleague that England is also having problems with immigrants. Anyway, I had a great 11 months working for BA, but working for Air Fxaxcx was not too pleasant, though it was still better than working in Japan. I noticed that Fxexcx people are as sarcastic as Japanese, they are surprisingly similar people[8D].
Cheers,
JPN

^Minnesota is now like mild winter for 90% and then 1-2 weeks of really really cold weather. Right now it's bad (20F) but not as bad as it's been in a long time (the last couple winters have been mild. There is barely any snow)..
JPN, I think some companies will help you get your Visa/Green Card/etc.

RE: braking issues..
Hi Jimmy,
For some reason, the forum has been cutting me suddenly and I just lost a half-hour reply[8D].
My professor once told me that the university he went to in MN had underground passages, as the ground was too cold or snowy. Also, I once did a cross-country driving in my '88 Accord LX-i in my younger days (10 years ago, when I was 23) and stopped at a local town in southern MN. The town looked like it had not changed since the 1920's. Loved it. Also, I once stopped at St. Paul airport on my way to Japan, and thought that the airport was the cleanest one I had seen, as well as many attractive shops.
>JPN, I think some companies will help you get your Visa/Green Card/etc.
Negative. Currently, companies in the States cannot hire a foreigner, unless he/she already has green card. My current employer is 120% willing to sponsor me and we went to 2 immigration lawyers but neither could help me. It is that difficult now.
Until about late 80's, getting green card was nowhere as difficult as it is today. However, it has become almost impossible, their excuse is probably "anti-terrorism" or something of that sort. This is why I've seen many Japanese women (or from anywhere) exploiting marriage and becoming permanent residents, even though they did not possess specialised skills or could not communicate in English efficiently. After all, there are quite a few desperate guys here[8D].
Work visa, usually referred to as H-1B, has a limited number available and is generally given to highly-skilled personnel such as lawyers, medical doctors, college professors, etc... (I guess having two 4-year college degrees + two federal licenses isn't considered "highly-skilled" enough). Nurses are currently exceptions, due to the serious shortage in the States. This is unofficial, but those who are nurses or have nursing degree can get instant green card, regardless of English proficiency. This is really upsetting to me.
I am not eligible to apply for a decent, or even average jobs in Japan due to my age and educational background (they don't like you if you got education overseas). Once you're over 27-28 years old, you're considered too old for a new career and are automatically rejected.Job-related discriminations in Japanare beyondanyone's imagination. Also, at this point 99% of my friends are Americans and I have no intentionto wasting my life in Japan for $10/hour with no benefits.
Well, one way or the other I'll try my best to come back to the good old U.S.(within legal means) or divert to Canada.
Jim in the UK,
I apologise that I again deviated the topic to outside the solar system. Take care, we will be waiting for your report whenever you get better.

RE: braking issues..
Sorry to bump this thread, got 2 things...
1. Any update for the brake issue?
2. JPN/Axel. I am writing a paper for an essay contest about immigration. I'd like to use JPN/Axel's sister as examples of why the US's LEGAL policy actually needs reform, however:
a. Is that ok with you guy?
b. If yes, I'm going to need names and some things about you (education level, where you got your education, etc).
JPN, your profile is private.
I'll send Axel a PM shortly.
Thanks,
-Jimmy
Edit: About the name thing, I think I could just make up a name to keep your info private (if you want of course). I'm going to look right now and see what I'd do about citing the interview though..
Double Edit: I'll just use the made up name in the bibliography. If it doesn't work w/e.

Hi Jimmy,
Working on a college essay? Good for you.
Of course, you can use me as one of your examples. I enabled my PM for you, it's my secondary email account. When I receive your email, I'll give you my primary email (hotmail) and switch over. As soon as I receive your email, I will hide the PM again.
I wish I could keep it active at all times, but I once received an extremely harsh comment from a guy who claimed he had 30+ years of experience turning wrenches (but if that was true, the questions he was asking were entry-level). I no longer see the guy on the forum, so it's probably all right to reveal my anger[8D]. I just do not tolerate rudeness.
Anyway, PM me and I'll give you my primary email.
