There is a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) inside the ECC (electronic climate control) computer. Have the codes read.

Greetings,

In general, Volvo dealers DO charge just to pull (read) codes. A dealer in Schaumburg, IL (Patrick Volvo) wanted $120 just to pull codes for engine & ABS.

What year is your 850? If '95 or older, you can pull codes by yourself; no tester/tool is required ('94 & '95 also have DLC (Data Link Connection) connection for OBD-II scanner in front of shifter, right under the coin holder). If '96/'97, you need a scanner.

Try locating an AutoZone or other auto parts stores; AutoZone provides free diagnostic services with their scanner. Make sure to let them show you the code & description. I usually buy a quart of oil, etc... after having diagnosis done, just as a courtesy but that's just me.

As far as my 850 was concerned, theLED's used to blink for negligible reasons and I could still use climate control without noticeable problems. But clearing codes is preferred of course.

I hope this helps.

On a separate note, can I replace my manual A/C with an auto climate control?, I was wondering because I see they go on eBay for cheap ($75), like this one:

Would be nice to have it automatic ;)

No you can't unless you remove the dash and install the electrical Dampner motors.
Then you will also need the wiring harness for all the motors as well.

well I do own a T5-R! I just want to make sure that this baby stays alive for a very long time! plan to do a major upgrade in the future, but for now I need to make sure that I don't have problems that will effect me in the future, anyways where would I go in autozone to check the codes and stuff, im such a newbie at this!

AutoZone usually can retrieve codes in engine & transmission ECUs only and cannot access A/C. For A/C, the codes either would have to be retrieved at a dealer/specialised shop, or if your 850 is '93~'95, you can access the A/C from the OBD-I terminal in the engine compartment. You could tryhome-made testerat your own risk for climate controlcode retrieval(See attached pic); youmay need basic knowledge on electronic circuit (not a rocket science).

For engine & transmission code retrieval for '94-'97

First, locate one closest to you:

http://www.autozone.com/store_locator/home.htm

Then visit the shop and tell any of the store clerk that you want to have free diagnosis done. If your 850 is of '94 or '95, make sure to tell them that your 850 DOES have OBD-II socket in front of this shifter, under the coin holder (I'm not sure if '93 has one). They are taught that OBD-II can only be used on '96 or newer cars, but '94 & '95 850s do have OBD-II socket. If you don't tell them this, they will tell you that they cannot diagnose your car.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if it didn't or was not clear enough.
