FIRST LET ME SAY THANK YOU TO ALL THE GOOD PEOPLE WHO HELP EVERYONE OUT HERE! THANK YOU!
I recently had my oil changed at jiffylube, they said my fuel injector needed to be replaced, I hadn't had it done in the 3 years I have owned the car. I maintain impecable maintenance. Transmiss. Oil. Anti-freeze, so I said do it. After they finished the CHECK ENGINE light came on. They told me it was common with replacing the fuel injector and that it would RE-SET in about a week. Is this true, should I have a mechanic DO ALL MY
MAINTENANCE? I figured a fuel injector was a simple process, but now I am weary. Any input would be appreciated. THANKS!

Sounds fishy to me. Have the code cleared and see if the CEL comes back.

I have never heard of an oil shop changing injectors. Are you sure they did that? Maybe you are confused with something else, like adding injector cleaner to your fuel.

I think your first mistake was taking your car to jiffy lube!? Have you looked at your injectors since they did the work?
How would they know an injector needed to be replaced, what did they have to back that up or did you just need an "injector service"? What was it about your injectors that you said you hadn't had it done in three years?

Hi Geetarslim,

First of all, fuel injectors usually do not need replacement, unless one is absolutely sure that they are shot. Even so, the only justification to replace all 5 injectors on 850 is that the fuel filter has failed completely, which has never been reported on this forum (and I personally have not heard of it either), and allowed all kinds of debris flow into each injector (Or the engine catches on fire and burned all electrical wires, etc...). Did they actually say fuel injector, or did they say fuel filter? It may be too late, but next time when a shop tells you that they're going to replace something, MAKE SURE to let them show you the parts they take off of your car and make them explain why those parts needed replacement. Very often, you do not have to be an expert to tell whether a part was faulty or the shop was just trying to make profit off of you, just by looking at the parts (visual inspection).

Negative. Simple replacement of fuel injectors or filter should not trigger CEL. They may have replaced the injectors while the ignition switch was at position-II: Vehicle Power ON. Or may have accidentally knocked off an electrical connector.

It all depends. If you need to have a mechanic do your maintenance, make sure that the mechanic is a fully-certified ASE (Automotive Service Excellence: a voluntary national certification program) Master Technician, and it would be preferable to have it serviced either by the dealer or by an independent shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes. The latter may be better in some cases, since some dealers are noted for selling you unnecessary parts & services. Also, if a shop is willing to accept parts from customers, it would save a bit of $ by getting parts on your own at a place such as:

Many members here do their own maintenance, as they know that the job would get done right, and they love working on their Volvos. And as far as I can tell, many of them have better knowledge & skills than generic town garage mechanics. All you need: A basic set of metric tools (Torx bits are a must), service manual, parts and common sense for safety (yes, safety should be the top priority).

I hope this gives you some ideas.

And to add to Nick's reply, the reason is because those franchise places are where entry-level technicians are, and today's cars are so complicated, especially in electronic control systems that a shop that services all kinds of different manufactures' cars would not have sufficient diagnostic equipment or up-to-date service publications.

I suppose they changed the fuel filter. I can't believe somebody at a JL will even touch your fuel rail, and much less try to service the injectors.

THANKS FOR ALL THE TIMELY REPLYS, I am such a dumbass, it was fuel system service, they added something to the gas tank and did some other work under the hood. I am going to an ASE mechanic from now on! I didn't know they can be so unreputable, I USUALLY TRY TO FIND THE BEST IN PEOPLE, but sometimes you get burned, Anyway, thanks for all the SOUND ADVICE. I am going to get my brakes done soon and will ask the mechanic about it. THANKS AGAIN, YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

If you can find an independent shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes, with Master ASE technicians, and is willing to accept parts from customers, it would be ideal.

Here's a vendor many of us use, as they only sell either OEM (the parts suppliers that supply parts to the assembly line, they're generally the best parts) or high-quality aftermarket parts:

I found a reasonable knowledgable mechanic NOW! They connected the scanner and just reset it, I WILL NEVER GO TO JIFFY LUBE
AGAIN. I'm just glad that this incident forced me to find a good mechanic, I AM SO EXCITED. THANKS TO ALL YOU GREAT PEOPLE here at Volvo Forums!

Found a GREAT MECHANIC who is very knowledgable about imports and the 850, he just hooked up a scanner (to make sure nothing was wrong) and then just reset it. I WILL NEVER GO TO JIFFYLUBE AGAIN! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP! The people at this forum are
a credit to society and I appreciate all the responsed I got. YOU GUYS ROCK!
