Daughter broke down..

Going back home to Quincy, Mass.. from Del., she developed a problem .. Long story short, car is at South Shore Volvo and am being told no compression in one cylinder..To pull head and finish diagnose problem would be 700.00.. Car is a 93 Volve 850T ,,motor has @130,000..Questions would be 1- reliable shop and 2- @cost of head gasket replacement and any thing else that should be looked at while they are there?? TIA.. Questions are welcome..

Sorry to hear that. Who diagnosed the compression problem? The same Volvo shop that will "repair" it? Please tell us more about the car´s history and scan the car´s electronics to see if any fault codes are available.

Good luck

As long as they are in there, I would recommend a complete timing belt job, unless it has been done recently. When I say complete I mean all rollers and tensioners as well as the belt.

Good luck,

Glenn

RE: Daughter broke down..

Car brought from original owner, doctor who had it dealer serviced..Had it 1.5 years with no issues except 3/4 hit on drivers side front .. Daughters fault.. So fresh antifreeze 6 months ago with new rad.. No codes available as car is up there.. Just said dead cylinder.. Had to pull head to determine problem.. Will check file of receipts that came with the car if I can find them..

Greetings from Vermont.

I agree with both Axel & Glenn. "Dead cylinder" could have also been due to a loose spark plug wire, injector blockage, etc...unless you were there with the guy and saw the compression gauge reading. Tech may have another eye-popping suggestion...

Will wait for your update

Alright just heard from the shop.. Carbon buildup in head caused it to burn a hole it the head.. Looks like i m going for a 12 hour round trip hour drive to retrieve it.. Any extra heads laying around or any dealers for a good price?? Have mechanic here in delaware for the fix.. Thanks for the help guys..

Hole in the Head?
Never seen that one.
Many burnt valves.

Sounds like a burn't valve issue.

Make sure you have them show it to you.

100% agreed to Tech.

If a carbon buid-up causes a hole in the head, many cars are dead by now[8D]
