Seatbelt replacement with photo
Hi all,
I've read several threads regarding seatbelt replacement and want to be sure what I'm about to do, so I took a photo of the seatbelt assembly in my 1996 850, and would like confirmation.
First off, I disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent SRS light activation.
Then, I remove bolts A and B. (and the stud holding the other end of the belt near the bottom of the seat).
Then I just replace in the reverse order.
So far so good?
Questions:
What is the gas cylinder D for? To activate the tensioner (is that C?), or to inflate the sips airbag, or to maim shadetree mechanics to prevent them from reproducing? (Ha! Too late.)
Finally, I read somewhere about a red key above the seatbelt assembly. Is that E, and what is that for?
Thanks for the help.

The part D is an explosive charge that retracts the steel cable and cinches the seat belts tightly. It is triggered electrically by the SRS module.
The ones that I have replaced didn't have the part E so I'm not sure what that does.
The "safety" for the SIPS is actually located below the power seat adjuster panel (if so equipped) or the equivalent panel with the little trash holder next to the bottom of the seat.
Good job on removing the battery cable.

Just an update: I went to a local "Upullandpay" in Cincinnati and found a working driver's side seatbelt. (from the same year car, but belts looked the same from 93 to 97). After removing the trim, I removed bolts A (14mm) and B (Torx 30)
and the bottom bolt (12mm) holding the tail end of the belt under the seat, took it home, installed it and it's working fine. I disconnected the negative battery terminal first, and then reconnected when done with the installation.
Pretty good deal. About an hour of my time and $10 for a working seatbelt, as opposed to $227.79 new online (wholesale, supposedly), plus shipping.
