Engine wont turn

After rebuild engine wont hand crank - all timing marks aligned but unable to turn with timing belt on --- exhaust cam turns but intake cam wont - assembly oil was used on everything-did it sit too long - will i damage it by turning the cams slowly on their own to free them up??
i didnt put oil in the motor till today but it has been plastic wrapped for the last 2 weeks since i finished build
Im truly at my wits end with this car - can anyone help

did you use assembly lube on the cam journals when you reassembled? If not, you're metal to metal in there, and it's gonna be REALLY hard to get any rotation without damaging something.

try this

it is very hard to turn the cam being it is loaded by the valve springs ,if you lubed it it should be fine .did you try putting a wrench on the cam bolt and rock it ? does it move at all ? if it moves then it should be alright . pull the plugs and connect belt see if it turns then ,if it doe's it was hard to turn from compression

hookuspookus 11-09-2010 12:45 PM

you my have over torqued the cam journals , did you use a torque wrench ?

radio16 11-09-2010 04:53 PM

overtorqued cam journals?

there are no cam journals to speak of really just a seat - on the volvo 850 turbo

hookuspookus 11-10-2010 09:49 AM

are you hercules ?

you mean the cam just sits on top of the engine ? what type of mechanical device is used to hold the cam down in the journal ? not tape or gravity ? some sort of cap with bolts i hope ? did you try taking the the plugs out to see if it turned ?if the spark plugs are in the head too much compression , and why are you trying to hand crank ? that i don't understand ,its almost impossible to hand crank ,unless your hercules , i'm a master engine rebuilder so keep sending me pics and other info . again why hand crank ? did you ever have the starter hooked up and try turning it over ?

hookuspookus 11-10-2010 09:53 AM

you also say it won't crank with belt off sometimes the valves go down far enuff ,they make it so the piston jams against valve and it won't turn . and why would you turn it with the belt off ? you could damage the valves that way

hookuspookus 11-10-2010 10:12 AM

i just looked at the pic ,double OHC , you'll never crank that by hand put the belt on and use a socket on the crank bolt and turn it

+1 on that. You may need to pull the 3 billion 10mm bolts out to get piece of mind.

engine wont turn

hey hoocus i dont know what you are a master mechanic of (LAWN MOWERS MAYBE) - but when you rebuild a volvo motor you have to do 2 full turns of the engine "BY HAND" to make sure the timing is set right - i appreciate your input but if you dont know VOLVO --then please dont be so insulting to my intelligence --- ive done 3 in place rebuilds and one rebuild replacement for my car -- so i do know what im doing -and NO IT DOESNT TAKE HERCULEAN STRENGHT TO HAND CRANK THE MOTOR - JUST COMMON SENSE!!!!!!!

THANKS BOX - thats exactly what im gonna do tomorrow -- god i hate anaerobic sealer

also, to answer his question (which he should know if he's truly a master engine builder), the answer is no, there are no cam journals. they are built into the back side of the cam cover. There's a reason that thing is held down with 40 bolts. Torque on those bolts is VERY low - like 15-17 ft lbs, and the proper way to bring them down is 1/4 turn at a time in sequence until they get to specified torque.

you don't know what your doing if you did you wouldn't have to ask for help ,i would never have this problem . you can't even fix your motor ! thats why you keep pulling your motor out 3'xs you said right 3 times thats what i thought . i hope you turn the key and it seizes. i've built over 2000 engines and have never had to ask ANYONE for help . i guess your brain is to tense 2/10 the size of a normal one

thats what i asked this kid in the beginning , and when you have over 2000 rebuilds under your belt write back . i looked at his pic and then saw what kind of set up he had . i know more about engines then you'll ever know

ibified 11-12-2010 08:37 AM

Sure you do. That's why you didnt know that Volvo motors don't have cam journals when I did.

Anyway, I think I've wasted enough time on you. Have a great life.

Hookuspookus,

This is an interference engine, the valve cover holds the cams in the head. The cams are line bored.
You can hand turn these engines over slowly by hand even with the spark plugs in. Obviously it would be easier if the plugs were not. Turning over the engine is done with the timing belt on, if not (being an interference engine) it would stop and possibly damage extended valves.
Turning over the engine after a timing belt has been pulled is recommended to make sure it is free and your not taging valves.
The cams can be turned by hand in the head but obviously very limited movement. I personally have been able to hand turn over a cam in the head after the head was removed from the block, its not easy. You can rotate the cams a bit using a wrench and the proper angle on the front bolts.
I would never 'try' to turn over the engine after a timing belt replacement until I was sure the engine could turn over manually without damage. Hence the recommended rotations.

You may have experience with engines but your questions gave the impression that there has not been much work on these Volvo engines. WE (all of us) can respect your position but you cannot begin insulting other members or try to pull rank on them out of anger. We are all here to help each other.

Hope I answered your questions.
