Extreme Difficulty turning off SERVICE light. Doing Something Wrong? I need advice.

So, my SERVICE light came on today at exactly 157,500 miles, and I want to turn it off.

My 1995 has OBDI setup (I think that's what it's called) with the wire and the button with the little red LED. I have followed RSPI's instructions as well as many others to a T, yet nothing has worked yet. Basically, the LED lights each time I press the button, and when I do the whole thing from the beginning, starting with the car completely off, putting the plug FIRMLY into port 7 on side A, then turning the car to the Run position with all the lights turning on in the dash, then pressing the button solidly 4 times, each time with the LED lighting. But, after the 4 times, it won't light solidly. Its like nothing registered. I've tried like 25 times, and it still won't go past the first 4 presses. My SERVICE light is still on.

I'm at a loss. Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Check on the instrument cluster to the lower left of the speedometer for a little rubber cover.

If there is a cover then you have an 850 fitted with a service light reset button, you'll need to use the button under this cover to reset the service light.

Not many 850's were fitted with this feature, but if it is, you cannot reset the service light through port A7 under the hood.

Edit:

Just remembered, check the little wire coming from the diode for the OBDI ports, make sure that its actually attached. Mine came with the wire broken so I have to make sure its pushed in really well before I can do the test or it just doesn't react.

If the RPM gauge goes up to 7000 you have the VDO cluster which will be resetted by the box in the engine bay.
If the RPM goes up to 8000 you have Yazaki which should have the extra button in the cluster, although I am pretty sure these ones (with service light) came after 96...

Normally for VDO the procedure is as follows (done mine 1 week ago):
- Lead into A7
- switch ignition on
- 4x press
- wait for the light the go on
- 1x press
- wait for the light the go on
- 5x press
- wait for the light the go on
- 1x press
now the LED should flash very fast and the SRI should be out.
Cheers
Cristian

Ok, thanks for the responses!
I guess my 850 must be special, because my instrument cluster has the little round rubber cover and my rpms go to 8000. What is the procedure for resetting the SERVICE light with this setup.

I thought my SERVICE light looked a little different from the other 850's I had seen. Now I know why: different gauge cluster.

Glad you got it to turn off!

Those instrument clusters are usually 1996+ but you never know.
