Faded Bumpers Solution-Heat Gun

I was tired of looking at my faded bumpers and Back to Black from Meguiars does not last that long. I heard from a Jeep guy that had the same problem with his fender flares that a heat gun will Bring them back to black.

I used the heat gun with awesome results. I took some pics half way through to show you some results

The Heat Gun did not work on the Side Trim or Door Handles.

Let me know if you guys have any other solutions.

RE: Faded Bumpers Solution-Heat Gun

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the forum. Your bumper looks good where you
used the heat gun. What temperature is your heat gun and how
long did it take you to do the bumper?
I have tried denatured alcohol, a scrub brush and then burnishing
with a dry scrub brush followed by vigorous rubbing with a dry
paper towel. It's a lot of work and I don't think it worked as
well as your technique.
I've used Forever Black on my bumpers, trim, and door handles.
It's been on for 5 or 6 months now and looks almost as good as
when I applied it. It's a carbon black dye and it looks like "magic marker"
when you apply it. I haven't tried a "magic marker" to see if it will also work.
Other members on the forum have reported good results with
spray dyes made by IPD.
All the other products and techniques that I have heard about
will either fade in a few days or chip and flake off.
Maybe someone else on the forum can give some additional
information. Let us know how the portion you heated works
out, it seems like that should be a pretty permanent solution.

RE: Faded Bumpers Solution-Heat Gun

Hi John,
Thanks for the info on the Forever Black I will give it a try.

I used the Heat gun on High and Held it about 2" fron the Bumper until it changed color (kind of like spray paint). If you do not heat the bumper evenly you can have some discoloration (again like spray paint) . However you can always go back a touch up areas you missed. I practiced on my friends Jeep to make sure it actually worked and to refine my technique.

This has been talked about many times on many different Volvo forums.

1. Kiwi shoe dye

2. Forever Black

3. Actually painting the trim the body color.
