I was given a 1994 Volvo 850 and its been working well all summer, but out of no where, the fan that blows the AC, defroster, etc has totally stopped working.

When I turn on the car, the lights by the AC and REC flash for a few seconds. When I turn on the AC, I hear something reacting, but no blowing.

The fuses look okay. And I was told the Ac was totally rebuilt a year ago for $1,000.

Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it? (I really don't want to spend $1,000 on my "free" car)

Blower motor and resistor are the most common things to go bad.

How big a job is it to replace the blower motor, if that is what went bad?

 

Not bad at all about 30 minutes of your time.
Remove the Lower Dash panel 3 screws.
Then the glove box insert 6 screws and the Arms.
Then the Knee Bolster (Metal peice under the lower dash panel).
Then you can see the blower motor.

Searching feature is great! I just placed an order for the blower from FCPgroton and wanted to find a picture...so after searching, reading and taking notes, i found the above and printed, in color no less

 

As tech says, replaing the blower motor is not hard. Just take your time and don't force anything.

Hey that photo... that's on an ECC right? The MCC resister looks TOTALLY different.... right?

 

Yes that is an ECC resistor.
