Foglite switch wiring???? HELP!

I have installed aftermarket foglights on my wife's 850 & I'm using the OEM switch on the new setup. I am having a problem though. Every time I try to turn the lights on the fuse pops! http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for.../icon_evil.gif http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for..._surprised.gif
I know that the Orange/Green wire(+) goes to the lights & powers them up. The Pink Wire is nighttime illumination. The Black wire is ground. The Brown/Pink wire is power to the switch.
Here is how I wired my setup...Brown/Pink from Battery. Orange/Green I left as is, tying it into the wires to the lights. Pink I left alone. And Black is also left as is since it is ground.
So what is popping the fuse? http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...n_question.gif http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...s/icon_mad.gif http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...s/icon_eek.gif

Here you go, any questions PM me. Ignore the Molex connector, its just a splice for my tach.

IN a nutshell. Two wires go to the headlight switch. The other two go to the fogs via a relay. The Pink and Black control the fog light switch internal light. The brown sends out a ground to trigger a relay. The green is a +12v return line to the switch to indicate the fogs are one (it lights a bulb)

Do what Boxpin said, and you'll have great results. I did that for my car and I love it.

Boxpin I've sent you a message with some questions. Your schematic is great but for one thing. On all relays they have markings such as 86, 87, 30, 85. I know what they mean and I'm trying to figure out 2 of them on your diagram. Which one is 30 and which one is 86. Both get (+12) but which one gets what?

I am posting our conversation so others can benefit:

1/ Are the pink & black wires the ones you noted...
"The Pink and Black control the fog light switch internal night time light." ... I do not have to disconnect these 2 wires from the connector?

Boxpin**You would join these two wires to the same color wires on you Headlight switch. All they do is illuminate the little bulb inside the fog switch so you can see it at night. The second thing is does is provide the ground to the brown/pink wire so that wire can trigger the relay.**

2/ The hot wire from the headlight switch....is that a Red wire?

Boxpin**You wont use any other wires from your headlight switch other than the pink and black. Everything else happens under the hood**

3/ I can use a standard 30amp relay?

Boxpin**Yes, I used a Bosch standard black relay mounted next to my battery under the hood**

4/ Then as I follow you the setup should be as follows on the relay...
#30>power feed(+12) from Battery?
#87>Output (2)to foglites & indicator lite on switch?
#85>Trigger wire from Brown/Pink
#86>Power(+12) from head light switch?

Boxpin**
#30 will be the main power for your fogs, it should go directly to the battery.
#87 Output from #30 and will go to the fogs and also back to the green/orange. The return line will light up the indicator on the fog switch telling you that your fogs are actually on. If they were not on (meaning no power to the fogs) you would not get a light indicator on the switch.
#85 from the brown/pink...is a ground that will trigger the relay to turn on.
#86 This I ran right to my front headlight bulb power. You can be creative here, this is the 12v supply to trigger the relay and can come from wherever you want, your headlight, another switch, your ignition, acc, whatever you want to control the relay. In my case I connected to the headlight right off the bulb. That way when my headlights are on, my relay works and I can have my fogs on. When my headlights are off, so are my fogs. You may want to provide power from a different source if you want your fogs to run independent of the headlights.

Hope that helps.

Boxpin thanks for the help. Used your schematic and it took me about 15 minutes to put it together and try it. Marvelous. Very logical and very simple. The trick was using the (+) from the parking lite. The big POS#@*#@* was finding the screw/bolt holes to mount the bracket for the lights onto the chassis or body of car behind the cut-outs.???? Do you now where?

boxpin May 10, 2010 10:14 AM

OEM they are in the bumper rail, two holes. If you look at my photo gallery you can see them before I put the bumper skin on.

Here is a pic from there:

Well I'll be damned! I take it both sides have these holes? And this is on your 95 850?
I gotta get better glasses!

The bumper rail you see in the picture is off a T-5R, its not the one that came on the wagon. But, the wagon rail did have two holes for fogs but the holes were bigger, meaning the factory screws slid right through. I just swapped the rails.

Holy thread revival batman!!
Sorry guys, but I need to know if this set up is independent of the headlights being on or not. I'm gathering fog lights and parts and would like them independent of the park/headlights.

Any help and reply would be appreciated!

Alright my 97 is pre-wired, I got the J relays, light control relay, and lcr jumper from the junkyard, went back to my car to see it has all the J relays and light control relay underhood, but the light control relay is a different part # than the one I got from the donor car.

All my car did not have was the lcr jumper which is under the dash. Now i'm awaiting my second fog light and fiddle with the wires then.

rspi May 27, 2011 06:28 PM

The fogs on both of my T-5R's are worthless. On EVERY other Volvo I have had with fog lights, I could actually see the fog pattern when I turned them on. with these I see NOTHING. They just kinda glow so people can see that they are on. I think they are adjusted to low. I have tried several times to get the beam higher but NO go.

I loved the wide pattern in my 740 and 960's.

Vmax May 27, 2011 08:33 PM

So what about higher wattage bulbs? would hyper whites suffice?

I've heard/read that 850 fogs are worthless for visibility but they do look good when lit.

rspi May 27, 2011 10:02 PM

I have never thought about that. Is that an option? Install brighter bulbs? I think a lot of it has to do with the glass lenses.

Vmax May 28, 2011 01:42 AM

Sure, you can get bulbs with higher kelvin temps, 5000K, 6000K,8000K i'm pretty sure... the stock ones seem docile from viewing a few vids online.

The lenses are crystal clear, there is an oval behind the lense that seems to be the same hue as 98% of the other brands of foglights out there.

rspi May 28, 2011 01:59 PM

What temp do you think I have and what would be good, not to over power the head lights? I don't want to go get several sets trying to find the sweet spot.

i'm not sure what temps the headlights are, but troll ebay and get hyper white bulbs that'll fit the 850 fog lights. Make sure to go a set that are the lowest Kelvin temp, i'm sure they'll be brighter than the stock ones volvo uses. ...

on that note, my passenger side foglight came in today. I tried removing that bulb from the socket but it blasted to pieces, I had to PRY the base of the bulb out of the socket so it seems we are in the same boat as to what bulbs to get HOW DO YOU GUYS CHANGE THESE BULBS?? The wiring's all messed up so I think i'll take it to a shop to let them rig wiring from the factory switch to these fogs while maybe using these relays I got from a donor 850 w/ fogs.

The stock bulb looks weak too, so any aftermarket bulbs you get will most likely be brighter than them.
