Fuel Pump????

So here’s what I have done so far: Car 1995 850 T

Motor cranks but no ignition, opened air cleaner box hit it with some starter fluid and re-try, no change, next pulled coil wire off distributor cap and grounded while cranking, cool…. we have spark from coil. Next I pulled air cleaner box, turbo cross over tube (I think that’s what it’s called, goes from front to back of motor) and tried starter fluid again, this time it did not have to work its way through the whole intake system, no change. Next I pulled the distributor cap and cleaned the carbon buildup off the cap and rotor, tried again with starter fluid, bingo she fired up but quite right away. So now I know it’s a fuel problem and not electrical. Next I pulled one the fuel lines leading to the fuel rail on top of the engine (the one that is screwed on), cranked and there was no fuel coming out of the line. Next pulled the fuel line off the fuel filter on the out bound side of the filter and had some gas trickle out of the line however nothing out of the filter. Then I depressed what looks like a valve stem on a car tire and gas began to flow out of the filter. By the way how do the fuel lines attach to the filter??? Just by dumb luck I think I got the line to come off the outlet side of the filter. Are they some type of quick disconnect fittings??? The last thing I checked was the fuse for the fuel pump and it was OK.

Oh yeah is this the fule pump and why does it stay running for about 45 seconds after the key is turyed off.

So I kind of hit the wall here can anyone give me any ideas of what to check next and how do I check to see if the pump is working? And where is the bugger??

Thanks
Pat

The lines are kind of a quick diconnnect. You need to push the outer sleeve back then slide the line off the filter. I always use a pair of needle nose pliers and press against the filter and slide the lines off.

Not sure what you wanted us to look at in the pics above.
2 are of the end of the fuel rail and the other is a pic of the top of the idle motor.

Tech sorry I'm still learning my around your site... just add pic. The idle motor stays running for about 45 seconds after the key is turned off... is that right???

Thanks

That sounds about right.

Could be the fuel pump. but try the easy stuff first. Change the fuel filter, check the fuel lines for any breaks or kinks, and go from there. For an engine to run you need air, fuel, spark, and proper timing. Sounds like you verified #1 and #3

So you can hear your pump running?

Last summer I had the same problem. I verified it by pulling the cover off the access hole and tapping the pump with a wrench. That some how jarred it and I was able to fire the engine... I had to do that for a few days before receiving the replacement pump.

To answer your question about WHERE it is, if you put your rear seats down, remove the trunk carpet and that plastic cover thing right behind the rear seats, you'll see 2 access plates on the passenger side of the car. The larger of the two is the cover for the pump.
