Guess that knock

Well, here's a video of my wagon. Let's see if anyone can guess the knock?!?! I moved the camera around the motor to see if anyone could find a spot where it would be coming from.

Hint: When I put it into the drive the knock does not increase or get louder, it stays the same.

My other motor is about to undergo operation with a nice cleaning and de-accessorizing. So I don't really care about this motor, just thought it'd be a fun game. :p

99.9% sure that is lifters tapping!!!

gilber33 10-31-2009 10:27 PM

You think so? Should I throw in some ATF or whatever boxpin said? Maybe that will make it go quiet? That would be real nice, make it a lot easier to work on.

tech 10-31-2009 10:36 PM

That might do it. Usually when they are that bad about 30 minutes of driving it gets rid of all of it.

gilber33 10-31-2009 10:40 PM

Oh man, I'll have to give it a shot. I know there's more wrong with it than just that, it's got an awful leak to, there's a good size puddle underneath of it without it having been driven. I'm sure the PCV system is beyond clogged.

tech 10-31-2009 10:42 PM

Make sure the oil level is full before driving it.

gilber33 10-31-2009 10:43 PM

It's got oil, it was actually full when we picked it up, I'll probably have to add a bit. I think what happened is that it had a leak before and the PO didn't do anything about it and drove it dry, and that's why it didn't start for them. The oil in it looks wayyyy to clean to be old oil that has been sitting in a car for close to a year.

tech 10-31-2009 10:48 PM

Maybe. We had a car the other day that was 3 quarts low and was that noisey.
Added oil and drove it came back quiet.

gilber33 10-31-2009 10:50 PM

It's amazing how, lack for a better term, irresponsible some people are with their cars.

tech 10-31-2009 10:53 PM

Exactly!!!!

gilber33 10-31-2009 11:03 PM

That was a fun game. I can't wait to throw some ATF in there now and see what happens, I'm going to laugh so hard if it goes away after that.

_HighVoltage_ 10-31-2009 11:45 PM

Are you guys talking about putting ATF in the oil??? I've heard stories like that on really really old cars, but I didn't think it's a good idea on a new car (90's car).

My vote also goes for the lifters - i have the same noise, but mine is about 10x less noisy so it doesn't really bother me.

The Volvo owners manual says that it's normal to hear the ticking when you start the car and while it is warming up.

I once ran my 740 out of oil. It had about 1 quart in it when I finally checked it. LOL It reminded me of my mom long time ago, bragging to her brother (my uncle) about her '79 Cutlas Surpreme not using oil. So I walked outside (I may have been around 14 at that time) popped the hood and surenuff, it was not using oil, mainly because it had none. The last joke was on me because the car refused to let the hood down, took 30 minutes to get it closed. LMBO!

My 740 had about 405,000 on it when I finally gave it away. It was VERY CLEAN and ran great.

It's been done a few times by people on this site with good results, so I'm gonna try it.

That's a little more than a tick. If your in the drivers seat it's like someone banging a hammer on your hood.

I vote lifters also. If you haven't already, I would try either the ATF, of get a quart of engine flush (or Kerosene) and add it to the oil, run it for about 15 minutes or so (don't drive) and vary the RPM between idle and 4000 intermittently. Then change the oil and filter and go from there.

gilber33 11-01-2009 09:14 AM

Hopefully next weekend I can give that a go, too much on my plate to do today to try that. Like countless runs to and from the hardware store to try to find the right bolt for my engine stand.

_HighVoltage_ 11-01-2009 09:44 AM

Let us know how it goes.

Thats exactly what my motor sounded like!!!! Put them all to shame...ATF Baby!

_HighVoltage_ 11-02-2009 07:39 AM

When I told my mechanic the stuff about ATF in the oil he said it was absolutely stupid and crazy??? Does it really work? How much do you put?
