Guess that knock
Well, here's a video of my wagon. Let's see if anyone can guess the knock?!?! I moved the camera around the motor to see if anyone could find a spot where it would be coming from.
Hint: When I put it into the drive the knock does not increase or get louder, it stays the same. http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...h_DSCF1750.jpg My other motor is about to undergo operation with a nice cleaning and de-accessorizing. So I don't really care about this motor, just thought it'd be a fun game. :p |
99.9% sure that is lifters tapping!!!
You think so? Should I throw in some ATF or whatever boxpin said? Maybe that will make it go quiet? That would be real nice, make it a lot easier to work on.
That might do it. Usually when they are that bad about 30 minutes of driving it gets rid of all of it.
Oh man, I'll have to give it a shot. I know there's more wrong with it than just that, it's got an awful leak to, there's a good size puddle underneath of it without it having been driven. I'm sure the PCV system is beyond clogged.
Make sure the oil level is full before driving it.
It's got oil, it was actually full when we picked it up, I'll probably have to add a bit. I think what happened is that it had a leak before and the PO didn't do anything about it and drove it dry, and that's why it didn't start for them. The oil in it looks wayyyy to clean to be old oil that has been sitting in a car for close to a year.
Maybe. We had a car the other day that was 3 quarts low and was that noisey.
Added oil and drove it came back quiet. |
It's amazing how, lack for a better term, irresponsible some people are with their cars.
Exactly!!!!
That was a fun game. I can't wait to throw some ATF in there now and see what happens, I'm going to laugh so hard if it goes away after that.
Are you guys talking about putting ATF in the oil??? I've heard stories like that on really really old cars, but I didn't think it's a good idea on a new car (90's car).
My vote also goes for the lifters - i have the same noise, but mine is about 10x less noisy so it doesn't really bother me. |
The Volvo owners manual says that it's normal to hear the ticking when you start the car and while it is warming up.
I once ran my 740 out of oil. It had about 1 quart in it when I finally checked it. LOL It reminded me of my mom long time ago, bragging to her brother (my uncle) about her '79 Cutlas Surpreme not using oil. So I walked outside (I may have been around 14 at that time) popped the hood and surenuff, it was not using oil, mainly because it had none. The last joke was on me because the car refused to let the hood down, took 30 minutes to get it closed. LMBO! My 740 had about 405,000 on it when I finally gave it away. It was VERY CLEAN and ran great. |

I vote lifters also. If you haven't already, I would try either the ATF, of get a quart of engine flush (or Kerosene) and add it to the oil, run it for about 15 minutes or so (don't drive) and vary the RPM between idle and 4000 intermittently. Then change the oil and filter and go from there.
Hopefully next weekend I can give that a go, too much on my plate to do today to try that. Like countless runs to and from the hardware store to try to find the right bolt for my engine stand.
Let us know how it goes.

When I told my mechanic the stuff about ATF in the oil he said it was absolutely stupid and crazy??? Does it really work? How much do you put?
