Hard to Start

Hard to Start
I have a '97 850 Baseline with the 2.4L L5. My problem is that on cold mornings it is hard to start. Depending on how cold it is, it can take from 10-40mins. to start. It will turn over but seems like it is not getting fuel because usually when I'm trying to start it, it will start for about 5-20 seconds and then 'bog' down and die. When it finally warms up a buzzing sound can be heard coming the left side of the dash board at about 8 o'clock from the steering wheel. The sound starts out very quiet and gradually gets louder, buzzes for about 5-10 seconds in its loudest buzz and then stops and after it stops the engine will stay running. Any help diagnosing will be greatly appriciated.

RE: Hard to Start
I guess the first thing to establish is are you doing all you can for your starts? What is the condition of your battery and connections? Also, when is the last set of plugs, wires, rotor, and disty cap? Air fillter, fuel filter, and a zero weight oil like mobil 1 0W-40 or 5 w 30, they flow easier and make your engine easier to crank... etc...also, Have you tried premium fuel, those little things mean a lot to a cold engine...and last, is your engine throwing any codes? If all those have favorable responses, then get a compression check done...that is bucks. Sounds like your IACV may be going to so you may want to clean that up as well.

RE: Hard to Start
To answer all questions, Fuel pump relay is good, put new battery in a couple of weeks ago becausewhen this was happening my old battery would not keep a charge over night so ya know that stuff. Replaced plugs, wires, dist.cap, and rotor button about 6 months ago now for and got premium parts.(Nothing but the best goes in my baby.) Air filter done with oil change 2 weeks ago, using 5w-30 full synthetic. Been using premium fuel since i bought the car back in '06 (even with the prices!![:'(]ouch on the checkbook!) And last but not least, it is not throwing any codes. This is why this confuses me so. I got a buddy that is A.S.E certified that will probably charge me close to nothing to do the compression check so that is an option to look at and i will try cleaning or replacing(if needs be)the IACV. Thanks for your help and any other comments or suggestions are welcome.
Thanks again

See my 1st & 2nd replies in the following thread for possibly missed item:

Cold engine requires rich A/F mixture; are your injectors clean? Try a bottle or two of Techron fuel system cleaner. Some people seem to dump the larger bottle in a half tank. This is not a guarantee but an alternative.

RE: Hard to Start
For 1. JPN- Use it in every tank. Thanks for input though
2. Everything is checking out good so far which is worrying me
Mechanic buddy of mine suggested checking fuel pressure regulator. Thinks it might be "sticking" i guess you could say when it's cold.
What do you think??????????

RE: Hard to Start
no it doesn't really pulse it just seems that ,when it's doing this, it's not getting fuel so it boggs down and cuts off but when it does finally start and i first start driving it i'll make my first few stops at stop signs the rpms will go down by about 200rpm and bounce right back up(not sure if thissymtom is related to it or not)

RE: Hard to Start
GOT IT FIGURED OUT, FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was actually able to have my hood open when this thing happened and it started buzzing. I felt on the relays(main first) and the fuel pump relay was vibrating like crazy. I thought I had put a NEW one on but I looked through all my reciepts for the car and turns out i had just been stupid , went cheap on my poor Volvo, and got one from a salvage yard. It now starts right up in the mornings. Thanks for all your input guys.
