HELP!!!Getting No response from Diag Terminal A6

Ok,

I have a 94; 850 Turbo 116,000 Miles. I can read and reset all DTC's from A1,A2,A3 & A7/ But A6 gives no response. I get the LED lit when I press it but then NOTHING!!.

Anyone have this problem before?
I am also constant getting EVAP code 315 from Engine. Any suggestions?

I had 3-1-5 on my car when I bought it. The evap valve was changed and it disappeared. Make sure your gas cap is tight.

Are you sure there is a wire in the back side of the plug for A6?

As to Tech's suggestion, remove the OBD-I terminal from its nest and flip it upside down to see if there is a damaged wire or if the female pin fell out of its nest. If nothing appears unusual, follow the wire to see if you can find a damage somewhere along the wire:(.

RE: HELP!!!Getting No response from Diag Terminal A6

[sm=sorry.gif] I forgot to mention that I have checked all the usual things like, Yes there is a wire there, Yes, I cleaned the contact points, Yes I used an Ohm-Meter to check for shorts, The light comes on when I press the button but it never blinks back. A6 is for the Ignition and I used to get codes there.

I really appreciate everyones help, I have posted questions about other things on other forums and NEVER get any responses. This Volvo and my other VW forum are the only places where people seem to be helping each other. Like JPNI was professionally trained as an A&P mechanic about 16 Years ago. If given enough info I can fix just about ANYTHING on the cars I own.

I now have another set of questions.

Since the ATE ABS units are prone to failure on the contacts along with the Fuel Pump relay and horns. Is it possible the ignition computer has gone bad at this point? Does anyone know what pin inside the box the test lead goes to? I could meter it out if I knew.

Question #2 Where is the EVAP purge Valve????

Question #3 I have a wire with a 2 pin connector (like most of the connectors on the car ABS sensor, TPS, Horns etc) it is hanging loose down between the radiator and the engine block. I was pretty sure it was a knock sensor wire disconnected at an oil trap change, but when I took off the intake to replace the oil trap last week it wasn't that. I cannot find any disconnected female connectors anywhere. Any ideas what this thing is???

RE: HELP!!!Getting No response from Diag Terminal A6

1. Your ABS module isn't prone to go bad. It is only the Late 95 and newer computers.

2.The evap purge valve is the valve that mounts on the cooling fan. You should see the 2 hoses and plug pretty easy.

3.Maybe it might be a temp sensor plug. Does your car have the trip computer?

For the no diag problem I would remove the computer and clean all the connections and reinstall and see if it helps.

RE: HELP!!!Getting No response from Diag Terminal A6

Thanks,

Yes the car has the trip computer and the temp sensor is mounted further forward near the valance. It has its connector on it. My only guess it that maybe it is for some kind of diagnostic or service function? It comes out of the starter wiring harness I think. I will pull the computer and clean the contacts. Do you know where I can get a schematic that might help me trace the wire from the Diagnostic Connector back to the computer?

Also, I get ridiculous codes from the ABS computer. Like brake pedal switch problems. The switch is fine. I also get wheel sensor errors but they are inconsistant. I have heard that the ABS computer goes bad. I got one off ebay for $30 that had no problems. I will try that and see if the trouble goes away.

Is there any way to know if the recall on the wheel sensor wiring applied to my car and if it was done?

Not sure where to get wiring diagrams from anymore the site was closed down.
I will have to try to see what the plug is for on another car.

Have the dealer look up the Vin# for open recalls.

Hey, 1996, just curious if your 94 also has a OBD II port inside the car up underneath the coin holder. Somewhere along the way, I remember someone telling me--when I asked the same question--that during the late model years of94...that volvo began installing the OBD II ports but they were not fully functional until late 95, hence the ignition was added to the OBD II port and taken from the self diagnostic unit.
I don't now how reliable this information is and I can't seem to find it in amy of my log files, but I do no some of what was said to be true. So I took it for face value and moved on, since, I didn't have any ignition troubles...knock on wood.

1st pic: Data Link Diagram.
2nd pic: Starter Circuit Diagram for the mysterious connector reference.
3rd pic: OBD-II Port for '94 (Remove coin holder/check for label that says "This car is certified for OBD-II" on or near passenger side strut tower). My '94 T5 had it.

Sometimes you can find valuable info in the "Off Topic" or "General Volvo Chat" sections, which many people ignore.

Good luck,

Some models seem to have 3 ECUs, while others have only 2. Mine had only 2. The pics are for '95, but '94 is similar.

JPN,

Thanks, these will be invaluable!!

Luther,
I do have the OBDII Connector in the car, but I remeber clearing some ignition codes when I got the car a year ago.

I bought it from a friend of the family for only $300!! It had some damage to the grille and hood from an incident with a Class 3 trailer hitch!. I registered it and my wife drove it with the damaged hood & grille for 2 weeks. One moring while taking my daughter to school she stopped behind a car that was waiting for a school bus to pick up kids. The girl in the car in front of her had only had her license for 2 weeks. She backed up a few feet to let the kids get between her and the bus. Well, she left her car in reverse and when the bus left she sat there for a few seconds causing the cars behind my wife to honk their horns. Well when she heard the horns she stepped on it and backed into my wifes Volvo! The best part was my wife was smart enough not to tell the police that the nose of the car was damaged before the incident. We got $3,900 from her insurance company!! I bought a headlight assembly, the lower headlight trim, grille and hood. I painted the hood and trim myself. It only cost me $900 to fix like new!

My pleasure, I hope all goes well; I'm sure it will, considering your expertise.

>Well when she heard the horns she stepped on it and backed into my wifes Volvo!
That reminds me of my first college years, when this brainless Bulgarian exchange student girl floored the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal on my '87 POS Escort, ending up destroying the tie-rod in two pieces. She did not even offer to pay 1% of the repair bill.

I don't know about many women; I've given quite a bit of helpful info here to some females who desperately needed help, and none of those who said "I'll let you know how it goes" never replied with results; I guess many women don't value what they don't pay for; I should have charged them $10 per word.

Well, enough burbling. Good day!

RE: HELP!!!Getting No response from Diag Terminal A6

:DWell, seeing how helpful you and Tech are, and considering I work a really nice schedule. (4 days on - 4 days off 5:00PM to 5:00AM) I hope to be able to help on this forum. My wife and I sat down one day and tried to come up with a monetary figure of how much money I have saved us and her family in car repairs. In the past 9 years we came up with a conservative estimate of over $25,000!!

Like I said in my earlier post and on some of my other posts, the issue with modern computer controlled cars is not knowing how to fix it. It is knowing where to look and getting technical info. If the average car owner (male or female) were to spend a few hours a week researching info on their cars, checking tire pressures, CEL codes, condition of plugs wires and distributor/coil, vacuum lines, etc. I am sure that the oil pricing, air pollution etc would come down. I have tried to teach my wife how to inform me of any little issue with the car and make note of the surrounding conditions. It has taken 9 years but she has learned how to judge when tires need air, oil getting low, etc. She surprised the SH@! out of me the other day when she started her car put on the flashers and walked around to check her light bulbs!! I laughed and told her that the volvo has a light to tell you when a bulb is out!!!

As far as women drivers are concerned, the poor girl who backed into my wifes car probably would not have done so if someone wasn't so impatient and started blaring the horn. Society as a whole especially in the US needs to realize that a car is a very dangerous thing requiring your total attention. If people stopped eating, talking on the phone, changing clothes, putting on makeup & doing their hair while driving, the US car insurance rates would drop 50%!! We could drop them more if people understood that the left lane is for people going over the speed limit, the middle is for trucks & busses and the right lane is for entering, exiting and people doing AT LEAST the speed limit!!

RE: HELP!!!Getting No response from Diag Terminal A6

Agreed, I keep writing here & there that only 15% (or less) of all drivers in the U.S (and it's probably the same world-wide, except maybe places like Sweden, where you have to pay a huge tax when buying a new car, which is enough to buy another new car) take good care of their cars and the rest of the drivers never even follow scheduled maintenance; they don't go to shops until something breaks. They think oil change alone would keep cars running forever, whereas in my personal opinion, an oil change consists only about 10% of what a modern car needs in order to keep going efficiently & safely. Manydrivers still believe in some myths about cars and I really don't knowwhere they get them from. Buying used cars in the States is pretty much a gamble, if a customer didn't know what to look for. U/S (un-serviceable) air conditioner is way too common, as many drivers don't run the air conditioner for a few month in winter (they just don't know that the heater can be used with the A/C running), people never replace coolant until it becomes brown, brake fluid being used for 10 years whereas it is recommended to replace at every 2-3 years, etc... The firstthing many people fail to do is to read the owner's manual.

I posted a thread titled "Importance of Vehicle Maintenance" somewhere in the Off Topic or General Volvo Chat section (I think it was in the "Off Topic").A few months agoI inspected a friend's truck and found some issues and wrote up a list of maintenance recommendations and they didn't seem to have followed it, as I heard that the radiator went south recently. But I think the rad was probably ok, and the problem was the upper rad hose, as it looked pretty bad when I looked at it and their favourite mechanic raped them with unnecessary rad replacement. And here's my favourite personal axiom; "A recommendation forfinding a goodauto shop from those who don't know much about cars is almost always useless".

And as far as I'm concerned,a personwho says "I'm a good driver"is never actually a good driver. A truly good driver knows that there are situations that are beyondhis/her capabilities.

>Society as a whole especially in the US needs to realize that a car is a very dangerous thing requiring your total attention.

Wait till you seedrivers in Japan[8D]. Cars have a right-of-way over peds.

Well, time for me to get off my soapbox or I'll end up writing a 500-page essay.

P.S: I think your wife couldmake a great line-technician.
