Help! Serious smoke from '95 850 Turbo!

Guys, I noticed my car boosting a lot sooner and burying the gauge. I didn't think to stop and look at the turbo and by the time I got home, I was burning oil through my exhaust. I have a feeling that it was over boosting and might have fried the seals. Is this assumption correct?? Also, keep in mind, I'm a lead foot driver and I'm hard on cars. I also noticed after popping the hood that the compressor side wastegate hose came off. The old pinch clamps failed.

what was the color of the smoke?how many miles do you have on your car?

Chrispy_T 04-08-2013 12:23 AM

The car has a tick over 169k and the smoke was almost bluish. I know from the smell of the smoke that it has to be oil. As a side note, I also have a PCV problem I need to take care of ASAP. Dipstick smoke.

Hi Chrispy, welcome to the forum.

Fix whatever came loose and see if that takes care of the problem. The more you drive it like that the more damage you'll do to your turbo.

RSPI would it be his valve stem gone bad?

Valve stem? I have no idea. I just know I have read several post about people over boosting with stuff wrong with parts at the turbo and they end up damaging things if they don't take care of it soon.

The valve stem seals are an interesting guess. If he's over boosting on a 150K engine he might have blown one off it's seat around the stem and when he's not boosting the vacuum in the intake might be sucking oil in
It's a reach.

But the over boosting has to stop or you'll lose the headgasket soon, if not already. The headgasket failure isn't always to the water jacket it can blow out to the oil passage too where it's pushing pressure into the oil passage and sucking it into the combustion chamber. That is a little more likely cause of your problem.

Major false alarm (for the most part), the car didn't smoke at all today. I have a feeling that when it sits at idle for any length of time, the oil seals leak slowly through the turbo and when I hit the gas, it's burning what didn't burn at idle. The car sat idling for a little before I noticed the smoke. I was busy fixing my friends car with the headlights as the work light. I'll test that theory tomorrow and let the car idle for five or ten minutes and see what it does.

If the car is smoking after sitting idle, you most likely have bad valve stem seals. That's how most people test them.

However, I don't see how that effects the boosting. That's a totally different issue.

Well, I changed the oil today and had no problems all day. It's now running Mobil 1 10w-30. I fixed the wastegate hoses and drove it all day with no noise more than a normal, running Volvo. I came home this evening and noticed a loud tick. I pulled out a screwdriver and pinpointed it to the valve cover. It's not smoking anymore either. Is this possibly a lifter?

What brand of oil filter did you use ??

I used to like Fram but there is some evidence in this forum that Fram filters can cause an upper end tick or knock. Not sure if it's because they drain down or what but I had a noise myself on start up if I let it sit a day or two that I don't have now that I don't use a Fram anymore.

Chrispy_T 04-10-2013 01:57 PM

I won't touch Fram. Especially the ExtraGuard line. I used a Wix filter. I couldn't have afforded much better.
