Hyd. Lifters

I have a 1995 850 non-turbo that I pulled the head. It had a burnt #4 ex. valve. How do you tell if the hyd lifters are good? About 6 of them I can depress the inside and the others are hard. Are they supose to depress when the oil is out? I assume the other ones are probably a little gunked up and they should depress a little. Do they have seals (rubber or?) inside and can you clean them out? Any ideas other than replacing them all which I might have to do.

If the car has been sitting a while before you took it apart they might have bled down before you pulled it apart.
I would leave them soaking in oil and put them back in.

I was able to compress all in a vise (carefully with a cloth to not scratch) and get old oil out. I used solvant to cut the buildup and will reinstall them this weekend with the rebuilt head. Has anyone heard that there was a bunch of bad exaust valves in 850's? The machine shop said there wasa bulletin regarding some origional valves. Will post on the lifters and how they work after cleaning.

Listen (read) carefully to what Tech said. The object is to have them "hard" when the engine first starts which is accomplished by soaking them in oil for a day or so. Keep track of which lifter went where on the head since they all have unique wear patterns.

And after everything is back together, you may want to TLC the engine with full-synthetic 10W-30 (5W-30 for frigid regions), even though full-synthetic is most beneficial for turbocharged/high-performance engines.
