New Volvo Owner - No start / Rough Idle / Low idle/ Die, baby die
 

I have read through the stickies, done some searches.

'94 850 Sedan 194k miles.
Pulled into the drive way the other day and it died. Turned it over and it caught but was rough idle at about 500RPM.. could give it gas and hit 2000k then it dies. Repeat, Rinse, same again.

No codes.

Compression - yes
Spark - yes, tested, and replaced plugs, cap rotor since they looked worn.

Fuel. Fresh.
Replaced Filter - I think it was original equip.
Test Pump - kicks on, fuel at the filter.
Checked relay. Intermittent. Jumped socket, rechecked that pump is working. Stays on and delivers fuel. Replaced Relay.
Have fuel at the rail (valve check - gas comes out.) Not sure of the pressure as no one has a Schrader valve adapter for the gauge.

Vacuum hose from pressure regulator - brittle and not connected. Bought new hose connected. No change.

Still nothing more than a bad idle then dies.

The valve that sits in front of the throttle cable hums. (I think it controls idle air flow?)

Could it be the pressure regulator?
MAF? no code, no change in or out.

I don't know where to go next. What am I missing?

just an opinion, who knows might work, try cleaning the throttle body and see if it makes any difference. if it doesnt we can see what else you could try.

l am not really sure on how to check for a bad MAF. but on my 850 R, with the MAF unplugged, the car dies when its in drive, meaning the MAF is good. you could try that on yours and see what happens. everything could count towards finding the problem

What are your compression numbers?

I don't remember off the top of my head. It was one of the first things checked when changing the plugs. Had to use my neighbors gauge. IIRC they were around 190 +/- 5-7 (wet) and around 150ish dry and pretty even across the cylinders.


When the pump is running, if I press the pin at the rails, should gas spray out, or just flow out? It just flow out. I would think that if I was sitting at 40psi it would spray out.

If I could get the car to stay running long enough to place it in drive I would try this.

What's your progress. I'm in the same situation with my girlfriends wagon. I keep telling her its time for a built ls6 swap I have in my garage...haha

why dont you actually take a fuel pressure test and post it up here. it doesnt matter if there was fuel at the rail, you might not be getting the right pressure to make the car stay on. taking a test will make you certain you are getting the right pressure at the rail. do that and get back to us.good luck brother

Sorry I didn't get back sooner - work and holidays... life

So I pulled the pump. The pump works, but the hose from the pump that connects to the plastic "cage" came off. It was cocked to the side so there was enough fuel to turn over and start for a moment, but not enough pressure (obviously) to keep running. I reconnected it and it's working just fine.

Along the way, since its almost 20 years old, I replaced the injectors, rail, pressure regulator and relay.
